  • Error: Playing by year pulls in complete album, not just the relevant tracks

Don't know how long this has been an issue, as I very rarely play my music based on the year.

When you go to a year and play all songs, the complete album gets played. I have a Thriller album (1982) with a demo on it which I would either tag as 1981 or 2001 - I went for 1981 and now whenever I browse to 1981 and play all songs, Thriller gets included.

It's quite possible that this has been around for ages, but I couldn't find a thread on it.

Yes, the album is assigned to a year (probably the first track's - don't know). It's rather a release date than a recording date.

The album does seem to get assigned the year of the first track but that doesn't mean that the whole album should play if all songs from that year are selected. I have an album where all the tracks have their own release date and if I select all songs from a particular year only the songs with that date appear in the list.
I suppose what I'm saying is that I don't see the same behaviour as the OP. I seem to remember an issue with this in Material skin but this was fixed.

This does correspond with what I see. When you go to the year, you just see the correct tracks.
When you click "All Songs" that selection is not played. Rather, it plays the complete albums for any of the tracks that it found.

So it seems track selection by year is working, but playing has problems?

How do you play "all songs" for a particular year? I can't see a way to do it in Material skin

Click the 3 dots alongside one of the tracks > "More" > "Select" > click "Invert selection" on the top toolbar > etc..

If I view "all songs" for 1964 then 6 tracks from an album labelled 1966 appear in the list but none of them play if I play "all songs". Probably because the album has been assigned 1966.

Not currently implemented, but I've just added for 3.2.0
Material debug: 1. Launch via http: //SERVER:9000/material/?debug=json (Use http: //SERVER:9000/material/?debug=json,cometd to also see update messages, e.g. play queue) 2. Open browser's developer tools 3. Open console tab in developer tools 4. REQ/RESP messages sent to/from LMS will be logged here.

I thought this was discussed ages ago but maybe not. The search facility on the forum didn't help 😀

IF (and I know this is unlikely) there was ever a global rethink about tagging I’d really like to see 2 different year tags. Original recording/release year and media release year.
For example DSOTM is 50 years old in a couple of weeks time. It was originally released in 1973 but there have been many reissues and remasters. I like to see all versions grouped together so they are all tagged in my library as 1973 with the reissue / remaster date in brackets as part of the title. I’m sure an additional tag could make things much better!
Likewise there really should be a MM/YYYY capability to the release tag so that an artist’s discography can sort properly by release date rather than year / alphabetical as now.
Nothing to do with Material. Just my 2p about years.

I think having each track tagged by year (as it is) and treated as such (as it isn't quite at the moment) would solve most use-cases here.
For sorting the discography, I put the album year in the ALBUMSORT tag. I use 1988a, 1988b etc in the (rare) cases that there's more than one in a year - but using the months would also work as long as you went YYYYMM.

Why didn’t I think of that?!
That will do it nicely. I have loads of examples where there are multiple releases by an artist in the same year.
                            Thanks

I tried this this morning and of course it works for sorting an Artist's discography but then mucks up the (rarely used by me) overall Album listing. Will need to think which issue affects my OCD the most!
