Is it time to get rid of the Video & Photos scanner?

    >> (oh, and I'd have to replace the top left logo in the web UI - don't ask
    >> me to do that!)

I don't have the necessary fonts to start with. And I'm not an image
editor... but first of all it's the kind of work which is a waste of
time in most cases. Who cares, really? The web UI would require a major
overhaul, not a new logo top left :-).

NO! I use LMS to stream videos and photos to my TV and/or other streaming clients.

I was wondering whether the "Media Scanner" in LMS still makes sense (besides the music, of course). The "M" in LMS stands for Media, not Music. But is this really being used? There are much more powerful options out there to stream videos and photos to your TV. Why should LMS still bother?

Wow, didn't realize those options were still there. Thought they went away with the "Revue".

I use LMS only for music at which it excels.

Only use it for music. Does removing the video scanner help make LMS a more lean mean machine or does it just free up resources to focus on core mission of music? The hours I have spent looking for a logitech Touch replacement knowing it's days were numbered. Now we have all these wonderful pi - LMS based solutions. Thank you mherger for the support.

I messed around with the Andy Grundman UPnP/DLNA Media Interface plugin awhile back:

For playing DVD rips to my Roku, which I assume would no longer work without video scanning? I wouldn't be heart broken since I don't think I've actually watched a full movie using it but it worked kinda nice in my testing and meant I didn't need to install and configure another piece of software on my server.

I vote NO - concentrate resources on music, which is where LMS really
                excels.

Removing that feature won't have much of an impact on most
installations. It's already pretty much inactive unless you use the UPnP
plugin and enable media scanning for some folder.

But it would save me some hassle trying to build the necessary module
with all its dependencies for new platforms.

I'd say remove it but put a peg in the ground for the "last" release that includes it for those that do use it.

I'm not going to tag a nightly. If I remove it from 8.3, then that peg
                            will be the last 8.2.x.
