  • Mounting 2 external drives on piCoreplayer

I recently purchased a new 6TB drive to replace the 4TB drive that I am using for LMS and other files.
I mounted the new drive on the picoreplayer and copied the directories over one by one.

I turned off LMS while I was copying. Once I have finished copying, I will change the settings to point to the new 6TB and then let LMS read the new data.

The original 4TB drive has a ‘slimserver’ directory. Will that be recreated on the new 6TB once I turn the LMS duties over to the 6TB?

Also - is there any issue with leaving the old 4TB drive mounted, but not read into LMS? I plan to use it as a backup (second backup actually).
    Thanks fellas!

    • LMS will not create that directory.

If you can organise things so that the mount point etc on the new disk is the same as the old drive (move the old drive to a different mount point first) then you will not even need to rescan and all of the things that refer to a file by location will still work (eg playlists and, perhaps, ratings).

Another option, this is where the "Save LMS Server Cache and Preferences to Mounted Drive" can be used. You probably "Moved LMS Data" from your pcp SD card to your 4TB drive. If you still have it, and have it mounted, you could transfer it back to the SD, mount the new 6TB, and then move it to the 6TB. Or, mount the 6TB in addition, and move directly. You could even just keep it on the SD (I do, for various reasons)

Doing it this way, I am unsure of the affect on other things that Paul mentions, such as rescan, etc.

          Thanks for the reply.
So, to verify before I commit:

          - copy the 'slimserver' directory from the old drive to the new drive? (I held back on copying that directory until I was sure

The old drive was called HomeLMS. The new drive is called HomeLMS2 (creative, eh? )
          • In the Mount USB drive section on the pcp LMS GUI:
          • - rename HomeLMS to BackupLMS
          • - rename HomeLMS2 to HomeLMS
          • - Click "Set USB Mount Point"
          • Do I need to reboot or Stop/Start LMS?

Should I change the share names first? Also, I suppose a complete rescan wouldn't hurt and for some reason makes me feel more confident.

          • Easiest option if you're keeping the 4TB drive attached.

Mount the 6TB drive and point LMS to scan that drive for your music files.

            Job done.

              • LMS won't install

Hi all - I've Googled, searched the forum and am still stuck. If someone can link me to the solution that would be great.
Or suggestions for how to make this work would be most welcome.

My goal is to install PCP and LMS on a Raspberry Pi 3B+ Steps I've taken include:

                New download of piCorePlayer8.2.0.img
                Verified Checksum
Flashed to 16 GB SD card with Raspberry Pi Imager (without any user options)
                Booted Pi with Ethernet
                Set up wifi connection
Power off, remove ethernet, restart and connect with wifi only
Expand file system to full card
                Click "Install LMS"
Error message "There was a error downloading slimserver.tcz"; "Error downloading LMS, please try again later"

I've repeated all the above with a fresh download of the .img file, tried a 32GB SD card, and all permutations of wifi/ethernet network connections, image and cards. And then done it all again after selecting the Mirror Repo. Then again a day later.
And I've downloaded the target file slimserver.tcz on my PC, with no issues, so the repo is available from my network
And now I'm stuck for further ideas....

                Can anyone help, please?

                ****************
Update: I downloaded 8.0.0 and it all just worked.
Looks like an issue with 8.2.0

You might try to expand file system and install LMS while still connected to ethernet. And afterwards setup wifi connection.

                  • Saving ALSA mixer presets

I recall seeing instructions about saving presets for ALSA mixer, but I can't now find them with searches.
I'd be grateful if someone could point me to the instructions.
                    TIA

DOH! Looked into 'More' on Presets section of xtras_alsaequal.cgi: SSH'd in and edited /home/tc/.alsaequal.presets. All good.

                      • Is HDMI audio output still 'very unsupported'? I'm currently running pCP 6.1 and am about to update to 8.2.0.

I'm using a Pi B+ v1.2. The analog 3.5mm jack is just too noisy for even casual listening. I would appreciate any suggestions to improve audio quality.

Well one obvious way to (maybe) improve the audio quality is to utilise either a dac HAT or usb Dac.

Depends on your budget and audio set-up.

But what noise do you experience ?

At the moment I'm listening to headphones on the same model, with no artifacts yet. I just installed pCP 8.2.0

I recognise the headphone output is not the last word, but it should be, at least, reasonable.

                          What is your set-up ?

Is LMS installed on the same rpi ?

How is the pi connectedd to the network ?

What power supply do you use ?

It might be possible to improve things without spending too much

The noise is a random grungy sound like bad FM radio. LMS is not installed on same Pi, rather a dedicated server. Connected via wired ethernet. I'm using a CanaKit power supply.

I guess I should try analog output now that I've upgraded to pCP 8.2.0.

For line-level out, should I be selecting "Headphones" for my audio output in the pCP interface? Is there no fixed-level?

Thanks for the suggestion Gary. I tried leaving Ethernet connected, expanded the file system (2000MB this time) and clicked install LMS. Sadly, the same result as before, same error messages, so I'll stick with 8.0.0 for now.

                              • @ SamS

I used "Headphones" and selected "hw:CARD=Headphones,DEV=0" for the output settings.

I listen to one album and experienced a couple of glitches in the playback (milliseconds) but no noise as you describe.

There was some developement of the headphone jack a few years ago and that was incorporated into the current rpi software . I'm pretty sure it is in the pCP config file.

You asked about "hdmi" do you use the pi in this manner ?

If the playback is still unsatisfactory to, you then just decide a budget and do some research.

Or before doing that, you might try another OS (I would suggest Raspberry Pi OS Lite).

Use the Raspberry pi Imager Tool to maker the image. Install Squeezelite and see how it compares
