Mmmm, sounds like I'm just about to buy SB no 3. Does the Nov. 1 ETA apply to the NAS too (I think I'd be after the 200GB)?

              Looks very good...

Will 64Mb be enough?? Currently the slim.exe process takes up that itself. Will there be any scope to get them with more memory?

Re: New Squeezebox and Qnap TS-101 NAS in the UK

We shall be stocking the new Squeezebox (of course) as well as the Qnap NAS
units. The Qnap units will be added to the store for pre-order today; the
                Squeezboxes are already there.

With reference to the 64Mb memory in the TS-101. I have had 5x Squeezeboxes streaming different MP3 files from the box without any problems.

Both the web interface and the Squeezebox interface are very responsive and work quickly.

                  FLAC files play fine also.

If this box flys then there is some potential to get the memory upgraded to 128Mb or even 256Mb or you could just go for a 256Mb 800Mhz TS-401T

Will it be possible to install plugins on QNAP ?
How accessible is the underlying Linux - is there a documented telnet interface ?
In particular I'd like to try AlienBBC as there are Real libraries for PPC.

The TS-101 runs a flavour of Ubuntu Linux and we are currently getting all of the plugins that we can running on the box as standard.

The TS-401T is x86 based so we should have no problems running any of the plugins on that box.

I'm sorry, the product isn't for me (I've got already two machines running
                        24/7) - but I've still got a question:

                        > No have I forgotten any major features, hmmmm let me think?????
                        > Oh yes, it runs Slimserver 6.2 out of the box - plug in and go with

Is that auto update script/plugin available for the rest of us? I'm not
very happy with the one I wrote for my SlimCD...

It won't be no but we can tell you how we are going to do it.

I'll get you some details over as soon as I can but as you can imagine, I am a little maxed out this morning

This is a pitty. If it worked today, it's really much better than mine...

                            This would be nice.

The issue with memory is not rally how many players are streaming
at a time, but the size of the library. (Is this still true with
mySQL, or is the memory usage now independent of library size?)

When you were doing your testing, how many songs were in the
                              library?

For instance, my library has 6500 songs in it, and slimserver
(under Linux FC2) is using 74MB with no players playing. Adding
three players playing Flac adds only 1.5MB to the memory
                              usage.

Given that some of the 64MB of memory will be used by general
linux/drivers etc, and presumably some of it acts as a cache
for the NAS, only a part of the memory will be available to
                              slimserver.
