My planning ahead was acquiring 4 extra Touch Players, 4 extra radios (when Touch and Radios were super cheap when Logitech first announced discontinuing), and one new in box Transporter. The only flaw is that I have NOT needed to use any of these acquired extras because everything still works well.

No, plan ahead mode started 5 or 6 years ago and involved snapping up SB3's on eBay at a good price.

It culminates with a cupboard full of SB3's and Duets and the sound of your wife asking "surely you don't need that many?"

I have used this device with LMS and the Airplay Bridge plugin and found it satisfactory. I suspect it is no match for the Wiim mini, though. It would not be appropriate for audiophile applications, but it would work well with a portable speaker that has an aux input. An Android phone or tablet running the Material app could serve as a companion controller. Initial setup requires installing an app on a phone, iOS or Android.

Sound quality may be slightly better than connecting the headphone output (if available) of most phones or tablets directly to a portable speaker or using bluetooth, but my guess is that the difference is minor.

It's been four months since you started your search. Have you found a solution that meets your needs and interests?

I started the thread more in a plan ahead mode, for what to do when my SB devices break (as an old SB3 did a week ago but for which I had a spare Touch to use in its place). I appreciate all the responses.

The suggestions available today that seem most suitable for me are 1) Chromecast audio devices, still available on Ebay for <$100, or the Wiim devices. I will try to keep current on Wiim developments. The pro model seems to work with both Chromecast and Airplay, so that's some flexibility if performance is better on one than the other.

A Boom I purchased used for a second home has a wonky power socket. I have some concern about how long it will work so I recently bought a used SB Radio, my first of that model. That can stand-in as a connection as is or using the headphone socket for output if need be.

I get what you said, several times, regarding not wanting to put anything together. And there are options which have been shared. BUT I decided to finally take the plunge and put a 7" touch screen piCorePlayer with a JustBoom DAC hat because I bought my first SB when it was still SlimD and missed the boat on the Touch before Logi pulled the plug. SO glad I did! Works great! Looks great! And sounds better than my original Squeezebox. Might still want to consider. It's really not difficult to do at all. Buying the parts was the hardest.
