Please NO! This forum is pretty well-organised and clear - no need to change. INFO before so-called FUN

With a migration to discourse, the information woul not not be lost and it would be organized the same way but it would be easier to find and read, and it would be easier to write posts and to quote other posts and therefore it would be so much more fun.

Would some users be complaining about the new platform? Yes, definitely, but not because the old one was better but because people don't like change. But the experience from hundreds of successful migrations (many of them reported on https://meta.discourse.org) shows that even the most conservative and unwilling users eventually are happy with the new platform. Just try out the experience at https://try.discourse.org or at any of the existing communities using discourse listed at: https://meta.discourse.org/t/please-...directory/3102

Well, they would say that wouldn't they?

I am a conservative and unwilling user of some discourse-based community sites and there is not one that I am happy with, nor where the migration from traditional forum software has brought me additional benefits. Quite the reverse, in fact. (Hijacking common browser keystrokes – Ctrl-F, for one – WTF?)

Just to be clear: discourse is entirely free and open source. And it is not just the discourse developers who claim that migrations work well. Many site admins report the same on https://meta.discourse.org, in fact it is really only they who can tell, as they are working with their respective communities.

Just press Ctrl-F again and you got what you want.

Just to give a real life example of how much more user friendly discourse is: try recreating this post of mine (i.e. with multiple partial quotes from the same post) and then do the same on a discourse site.

Or how about replying to a reply you received via email?

AFAIK Forum is currently funded by Logitech - probably forgotten about in some budget. A change would cause re-examination of that funding - let sleeping dogs lie.

The frequent users of the forum is a small group who provide supporr and assistance to occasional users. The main thrust is not having "fun". User who wants to discuss topics to have "fun" generally use other forums.

This is indeed a good point. @mherger, would you agree that it's safer to not stir things up? Are we that much of a threatened species? I have so far interpreted the freedoms that Michael enjoys at Logitech as a kind of support from Logitech rather than an "accident" (if anything, the community is an extremely cost effective form of caring for your brand (not to mention the reduced support costs). But if he agrees that we are in a precarious situation in which not even his negotiating skills with his superiors would help, I shall rest my case (though not without mentioning that it would cost less than 10 € per month to host this forum independently on a VPS, and if the Forum is really under threat of being shut down, preemptively moving to an independent site may actually be the better option).

That is actually a common characteristic of many online communities and if it is an argument for or against migration at all, it is probably speaks more for a migration because the "occasional user" is more likely to appreciate the change (since it's not so much of a change for them and, more importantly, they would be the ones who benefit from features like improved search (honestly: if you have ever searched for a term on this forum, you know that it can only be improved, right?)

I'd say that serious discussion threads are compatible with "fun" just like you can say "My job is fun", but I guess my use of the term "fun" was misleading. I did not mean to suggest that people should come here to play around, make jokes, discuss nonsense or anything like that. What I meant is "enjoyable" or perhaps simply "a positive UX".

Is it possible to shill forum software?

This seems like a good attempt.

                      This, all day.

A forum migration is a significant undertaking. I think everything SB related is living on borrowed time. Don't rock the boat.

That's why I stick with the mailing list :-). I've yet to find a forum
software as quick as my mail client.

Yes. The forum has been the subject of discussions several times before.
                          Because there's support.logitech.com.

Since I use discourse, I often wish my email client was as quick as discourse, especially when I want to respond to specific parts of a previous message. In discourse, you just select the part of the message that you want to respond to and a "quote" button pops up. Click it and the selected text segment is inserted as a quote into your reply. This works even while navigating across threads.
