Spotify on Squeezebox / UE Smart Radio - end of life
Spotify on Squeezebox / UE Smart Radio - end of life
We want to give you a heads up that Spotify support will be removed from your Logitech Squeezebox and UE Smart Radio on July 20, 2017.
Spotify is discontinuing some device-specific integrations in order to make playing Spotify on your speaker and other devices better and easier, and regrettably Squeezebox and UE Smart Radio are impacted. See Spotify support page for details.
As of July 20, 2017, you will not be able to connect to Spotify from your Squeezebox and UE Smart Radio.
You can still enjoy your personal music library and other radio and music streaming services such as Pandora, Tidal, TuneIn and more. Please see the full list of supported apps and services here for details.

I assume it's a major change to the Spotify API that can not be integrated into the current LMS ecosystem without a major effort? Is it worth a crowdfunding attempt? I'd pledge $. And possibly effort, but I am a Python hobbyist these days.
I'd pledge $5k to the effort. But I'd make that dependent on an effort to turn LMS into a subscription service. Users would need to pay a moderate yearly fee. That's the way it should have *always* been, IMHO.
This is very sad. Although the decision has an irreversible feeling about it, if you're reading this and care you could make any feelings known by searching for "keep Squeezebox support" on the Spotify community site.
Michael, is it clear to you that Spotify's changes *have* to break Squeezebox integration? I think many folks might leave Spotify for one of the alternative services immediately, and many more in the future if Spotify can simply cease supporting hardware with only 9 days notice.
Worse, they are trying to sell alternative streaming hardware in their email informing customers of the changes, which is making a few folks angry.
Either way it turns out, thanks to the community for continuing to develop actively for Squeezebox: my 14 month old son loves music so much and I have to stop him turning Ed Sheeran up to 100 using the SB Remotes all the time

I guess this is the official Logitech employee speaking here. So Michael can't refer to the new unofficial Spotty plugin for LMS (made by Michael). Spotty builds on a new unofficial open source library for Spotify support (librespot). It works great and hopefully continues to do so:

Yes, this will end all clients using libspotify. The names mentioned in that linked posting are just the big names. There have been numerous smaller players (and open-source projects) using the same library, too. They will all go silent.

Thanks for the heads up.
My premium subscription payment was due to be paid today, and I've just cancelled it.
I wonder how many Squeezebox users use Spotify - if they all cancel subscriptions and tell Spotify why they've done it (as I did) would there be enough cancellations for them to take notice?

Is it not possible to install Spotty on you system?
