    play Youtube links

    hello All,

you can find many wonderful music clips on Youtube.

I wonder if I could play them with my Squeezebox server.

Not interested in the video part, of course.

yes I had seen that, but it streams a useless video too, and looks like abandoned...

YouTube only has videos so you always have to stream the whole video and somewhere separate the audio.
Playing URLs should still work with the plugin

I just tried it today and even playing a known URL does not work for me. Is this confirmed or is this my setup ? (just used the 0.16 from the repo)

I had a 5 min look at that and it seems that on top of moving to API v3, youtube now requires identification through OAuth to perform even a simple search (I've never used API v2 neither, so I'm not sure _at_all_ of what I'm saying) so basically, it means more modification of the plugin. Have to check if Net::OAuth is here by default in LMS Perl distribution (don't think so). Seems that a lot of work for a rookie like me on that topic. Is this plugin widely used ?

I found it useful to listen to music before buying it, which admittedly I can do on my PC. It is nice to be able to use the stereo instead though. Generally sound quality is not great so I used it sporadically. It has been broken and fixed more times than I can count; YouTube keeps making changes that makes the plugin fail

but still the plugin does not work as it did before. I am wondering if we could do some crowdfunding to have someone fix this issue and build a new plugin. I haven't seen Triode (who did the "original" plugin) online for a few month and wonder if he is still in business.

Who could develop a robust and easy to install plugin that helps us all?

                    cheers

Well, that's how it all started. I went out and offered an iPad here on the forum to anyone writing a working YouTube plugin. Worked at the time although Triode never accepted the iPad when he quickly realized he doesn't want to maintain the plugin.
Since for the same reason I don't see us doing a YouTube implementation in ickStream this might be worthwhile.

Be aware of the inherent issue there: you can only offer gifts or something. Nobody will be able to take creating and maintaining a working plugin as a contract because it can be pulled by YouTube at any time. And the problem with this plugin (like many others) has always been that it's maintenance heave due to all the changes YouTube is doing.

Coincidentally, I installed the Youtube Plugin today before I read this thread and I could not either get it to work. My motivation for installing it is because some of the podcasts I listen to are merely the audio from Youtube interviews and other interviews are only on Youtube. Would be great if one of the gurus on the site could resurrect the Youtube Plugin.

right, I know how that all started ;-)

I am in the software business (not a dev) and know how painful it is to build on someones API who does not really care about all those who build on top of that.

I actually love life gigs (currently listening on youtube to Bob James, David Sanborn & Steve Gadd - Leverkusener Jazztage 2013 .... ;-)... ) and my kids and their friends use that for parties. So having a plugin would help both generations a lot.

For me personally it´s mostly a question of the price. How much time and money would a developer need in order to build it once again with the current youtube API. Maintenance is second priority. I would do it but I can only code Cobol which does not really help ;-)

Any volunteers out there? your chance to become really famous ;-)

                          cheers

"Not care" is not the problem. "Explicitly prohibit" is.
