I went there, after your first recommendation. That helped ring a bell in the CD store, nice site too.
According to the liner notes (Luna), more traditional tango artists often threatened his life, waited outside his house to rough him up, one even barged in on a studio interview and put a pistol to his head. ¡muy dramático!
The google translation was amusing, I need to work on my Spanish!
"It tries to obtain CDs of epoca of the quinteto (quizas "the perfect" group but for the musica of Piazzolla), the loudness of the subjects but clear or is opened. "
:-) and google needs to work on its automatic translators!

The sextet period is considered the "darkest" sounding among Piazzolla's work.
Try to get some cds from the quintet period (maybe the more "perfect" group for Piazzolla's music), the sound of songs is more clear or open. The Quintet existed in two different periods:
roughly 1960-1970 and 1978-1987. The last quintet albums have a better sound (Zero Hour, La Camorra, etc), but all of them are highly recommended.
Tango:Zero Hour is maybe his most "known" album by US people,as it was the first one having an US label, and thats when he started touring the US regularly (mid 80's). Some of the songs on that album are older songs, rerecorded specially for that album.
I purchased Astor's 'LUNA' album today (1992 Lucho/Increase BV). A live recording of his final performance with the New Tango Sex-tet. I had a longer review written with some Piazzolla personal history included, but accidentally erased via autologout.
Great!
Astor Piazzolla :-)

I'll not ramble so much this time, but saying 'I liked it' would do no justice. The bandoneon under his influence is simply breathtaking. Every push of the button, every intake of air, every movement of pistons, all perfectly reproduced. The surrounding instruments are placed perfectly in the soundstage, in a more lifelike way than any track on the Chesky Classical Sampler. The hall ambience is INCREDIBLE and the audience polite and appreciative. Even their clapping sounds good with individual clappers being easily distinguished. It easily betters Pat Metheny's 'The Road to You', my previous 'live hall' benchmark, and betters most studio recordings I own. Enough hyperbole...
I shouldn't even attempt description of the musical genius recorded that night in Amsterdam, but I can't resist.
This music is different from anything I've experienced. It has the pacing and dynamic swings of great classical music, the atonal and dissonant qualities of great jazz, a sometimes dark side reminiscent de Tom Waits, and of course the sense of history, culture, and life that lives within Latin music.
I also re-purchased (once lost) Los Lobos Collossal Head, which I remembered sounding much better before my system got so revealing. While it's a great album, made by true artists, it simply doesn't hold a candle to what I'm hearing from Astor. Pure genius.
I reviewed after listening only once, and expect about 99 more sessions before comprehension truly starts to set in. It will surely be a companion for life.
Silvio Rodriguez, Dias Y Flores.
Charly Garcia (recomiendo Piano Bar)
Ruben Blades (Siembra y Buscando America suenan muy bien)
Sui Generis
Fito Paez (la la la, Abre Paez, Giros, etc)
Juan Luis Guerra 440 (No Es Lo Mismo...de 1998)
Y ya que estamos, agreguemos ... :-)

Both try to mix tango music (and its variations) with electronic music, using real instruments, samples, etc.
On the same line as Buena Vista Social Club (but just for tango music) and album called "Cafe de los maestros" was recorded some time ago, and it includes some old singers and musicians from tango golden era, in new recordings (this album was produced by Guatavo Santaolalla, and argentine musician/producer, who lives in the US, and besides producing countless of latinamerican rock bands, he recently won a Golden globe award for the music of Boreback Mountain. He is also the producer for the Bajofondo album above).
Now, for the real deal, go and buy "Tango: Zero Hour" by Astor Piazzolla... :-)
What kind of music you like? just spanish (music from Spain, that is) or latinamerican music too? sung or not sung?

[Hi Nestor. Sorry, I meant Latin Music : )
I have Buena Vista Social Club, and Paquito Rivera's Havana Cafe, but no others.
I like them both very much, but would be interested in something like ambient electronic, or something the young kids are listening to, provided it's well recorded.
