Got the card today....it does work, but the problem still persists.
I suspect its something with my server. Still trying to figure out this problem.

SO I need a new wifi card.
Can anyone give me a link to one?

    Does this one work?

Never mind....I figured out what you said.

    Widman,

Thanks for the update on your conversion; the pictures are an especially nice addition. Hopefully the information in this thread can help those who need to buy a replacement card because theirs have quit working and those that have wired only SBs and wish to upgrade to wireless.

I finally received the antennas and have installed them. My SB3 is in a enclosed cabinet and is accessing files from a server which is currently using a wireless adapter. The server is one floor up from the SB3 and music plays fine. I like to run the system with wired connections, but this was an interesting exercise in switching the SB3 over to wireless.

When looking on eBay, I searched for a "AR5BMB5 PCI-e" card for the adapter and searched for a "Wireless Mini PCI PCI-E Internal Antenna" for the antennas. The entire upgrade cost me $8, including shipping and I bought a backup adapter for another $5.

Don't forget that you might need to do a "Factory Reset" after installed the new wireless adapter.

Thanks Eeyore for your research. It helped a lot.

    Widman,

Those are similar to those in one of the links that I put in my post. I have a bunch of them but have never tried them since I also have a bunch of Apple laptop antennas that I tend to use.

They should fit since they are thin and you should be able to find a place to put them. The length should not be a problem either since you can coil them however you like although you should try to keep the cable away from the main board as much as possible. And you can "criss-cross" the antenna cables to use a little more of the length of the cables.

There is also the question concerning orientation. With rubber ducky style antennas you are supposed to position them so that they are parallel to the antenna/s on your router. I am not really sure how the flat antennas should be oriented although most laptops have the antennas mounted in the lid of the laptop so that is an indication of how they should be positioned. And there is also the question of whether both antennas should be positioned alike. Some say that the two antennas should be placed at right angles to each other. Once you have the antennas connected, and before you close up the SB3, you might want to play with positions to get the best reception.

Let us know how the antennas work so that other people converting their SB3s can benefit from your experience.

    Thanks,

    Eeyore

I ended up getting a pair of WIFI antennas from here:

They are 30 cm long, so I'm hoping they will fit easily inside the case.

Thanks again for the information you provided. The chipset details for the WIFI cards should probably be a sticky.

    Widman,

I am glad to see that you found a card to work in your SB3; and it was cheaper than the one I bought and, since it was not coming from China, you should have received it quickly.

You will need to attach at least one antenna but the wireless SB3 has two; I have tested wireless cards with only one but install two for the final setup. They are inside antennas like laptops use. I use antennas similar to this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Universal-Ap...item27b09ca4b9 .

But something like this should also work although I have never tried them: http://www.ebay.com/itm/2X-Laptop-WI...item1e5d5112b8 .

Simply plug the cables into the wireless card sockets and find clear spaces within the case and tape the antennas in position away from components.

I have also seen SB3s that have had external antennas added but that requires buying rubber ducky style antennas (they function much better than laptop style antennas), cables and then drilling holes in the case to mount the antennas. The positioning of the holes is critical since there is not much room inside the SB3 and the antenna mount can interfere with components inside. Unless you want a headache then the internal antennas is much easier.

The advantage to external antennas is that the reception range is much better with them. That is why I like the SB2. It has one internal and one external antenna. But I did convert one wired only SB2 to wireless and I put both antennas on the outside using rubber ducky style antennas; I did not really notice a difference with two external antennas over just one.

If you have any further questions just ask,

He could not give me any tracking information on that package but he did send replacements that I received yesterday. I really do not think he sent the original package.

Some good news and some bad news. The AR5BMB-44 card does not work. Either it is bad (I have nothing to check it in) or the chipset is too different for the SB2 to use. I suspect that it is the chipset since, rather than having one large shield, it has two smaller shields which I take means that it has two chips in the chipset. I have read that Atheros had/has one chip chipsets and two chip chipsets. The TL-WN560G has a single large shield. And the AR5BMB5 card that I received has a single shield and works in my SB2!

There are currently some cards with the AR5BMB5 chips for sale on eBay. And interestingly some of the sellers list the card as using an AR2413A AR5005G AR5BMB5 chipset. A picture is shown with the shield removed and the part number on the chip is AR2413A. There are also cards for sale listing only the AR2413A; many more AR2413A cards than AR5MBM5. Even though I now have a working AR5MBM5 card I am going to order one of the AR2413A cards and test it; as I mentioned in an earlier post Sean (founder of Slimdevices) had mentioned that he thought that the first cards used were using the AR2413A chipset.

I will get back when I have tested the AR2413A card,

Thanks for this information. I have a wired-only SB3 and have wanted to convert to wireless. I found the following card on ebay:

It was $5 with shipping and it works in my SB3, although I had to do a factory reset after I inserted the card.

I still need to attached the antennas because the card only sees my router when it is in the same room. Can I just use some wire and keep it in the case, or am I better off using external antennas?

    Thanks again for the info,
    Pete

    Vrette,

I purchase it from a seller named "cityeliter". It took 2 weeks from China to me in the United States. I hope this will help those that need a replacement card for their older SBs. I tend to like the SB2 variety.

    Good luck to everyone,

Good to know. Just curious, did you buy it from ali express?

    Everyone,

More information. When I tried to order an AR2413A card I could not find a US seller so I am going to order it from China; especially since it is only $7.50. It will take a couple of weeks to get it. Another interesting thing is that none of the boards being sold have a label indicating that it has an AR2413A; there are no recognizable numbers on the card. I mentioned that I bought an AR5MBM5 card but I cannot/don't want to remove the shield on it since it is soldered to the motherboard; I really wanted to see what chipset is in it. I was hoping that it was detachable like the shields in iPhones but alas it is not.

    There is one here: http://www.pcengines.ch/wlm54g23.htm

I haven't tried retrofitting an SB3 with a wifi card so I am making no representation whatsoever. This is just a hint.
