  • Squeezeslave alternative hardware

I've been messing around with an NSLU2 for a few years (not continuously you understand). And it occurs to me that there must be Linux based streaming media devices around that could be persuaded to run squeezeslave. Does anyone have any knowledge of this?

They call it the Squeezebox Radio or Squeezebox Touch :-)

NSLU2 has no analog or digital audio outputs - so you would have to buy a USB interface and then add kernel modules. It would look a bit of a mess.

The SB receiver from a Duet has better audio out and is small and neat

There are better starting points now than the NSLU2 such as a plugcomputer or OpenRD client ( http://www.newit.co.uk/store/index.p...up_image&pID=7 )

That OpenRD seems like a nice box but it's a bit pricey. For the same price you could by a VotexBox micro appliance. That way it would be a server (with a 500GB Hard drive) as well as a player.

Also you would be able to use VortexBox Player instead of squeezeslave.
rip, tag, get cover art… All you do is insert the CD!

Perhaps I should clarify. I was merely mentioning the NSLU2 as an example of a hacked linux device. I am asking about running squeezeslave on alternative hardware ie another hacked linux device that I may not be aware of.

Thank you for reading my post.

Squeezeslave is not nearly as good as a hardware player. I have squeezeslave running in my server as well. However, when listening to internet radio, it cannot match my SB3 and SBRadio. It cannot connect to some streams. Any nice hardware that you could find probably close to the $199 price you pay for the SBRadio.

              squeezeslave on openwrt

              Tony,

I've been running squeezeslave on my Asus wl-500g using some USB speakers (logitech just to give them some custom ;-) for a couple of years now.

It is maybe not as failsafe as my real squeezeboxes but it works fine (just need to restart squeezeslave every now & then - or if I can't be bothered logging on to it I just reboot the router).

It doesn't like operations like synching to the other squeezeboxes for some reason - although it does work sometimes.

VERY new to this, I already have a nslu2 and I would definitely like to run squeezeslave on it. Could anybody help me try to compile it on the nslu2 (running debian lenny)? There seem to be no makefiles for the nslu2 architecture.

Nitters: what architecture is the wl-500g? I assume you had to compile sslave yourself...

Have you looked at http://www.joggler.info/ ?

These look like quite an interesting bit of kit. Shame they've gone back up to £100!

Interesting, I consider getting one as well whenever I find a cheap one somewhere... though the other OpenPeak devices don't look bad either.

O2 Joggler is back to £50, so I bought one too!

I have squeezeslave working on it:

Picked up a joggler on Wednesday from my local O2 shop for ~£50.

Installed Unbuntu Netbook edition from here:

Installed Squeezeplay and skin from here:

Fixed squeeze play quit button with instructions here:

Connects and finds music etc but no audio yet, read I need to disable pulse audio but ran out of time....

Also installed mythtv which connected to my mythbackend and played back recordings with sound but no video, guess I have a missing library somewhere :-)

Will make a great little media playback box when complete :-)

                          Regards, Mark Leman

Yes, just disable pulseaudio and playback will be fine.

I have MythTV (0.22) running and it plays videos (via MythVideo) fine for me. Don't remember having to do anything special to get them to work. I don't have any recordings I can check check as I can't currently receive decent TV signals

                              Hi,

for a few mounth I ask about alternative hardware and dreambox. Dreambox is a SAT Receiver that is very often sold and there is an linux in.

Is it possible to translate squeezeslave for the dreambox?
