Instructions for putting together low power consumption LMS server ?
Instructions for putting together low power consumption LMS server ?
Hello
With the impending loss of BBC Shoutcast streams and no workaround via MySB.com, I need to consider an replacement always-on way of streaming via my SB hardware.
Previously I have used a low end laptop / netbook, but would am looking at alternatives eg raspberry pi or similar.
Is anyone selling ready made hardware ready to use or do these servers have to built from scratch ?
If the latter is it complicated, and there specific web resources for guidance ?
Do raspberry pi servers suffer from being relatively underpowered compared to laptop, tablet etc ?
Thanks

Certainly a raspberry pi is enough to run LMS
Other alternatives would be a a low powered computer like a Dell Optiplex (from the bay of sometimes not so evil) or if you have an unused computer / laptop, pop a Linux Mint or Debian OS on it and install LMS.
64 bit processer is preferable, but 32 bit is possible, with a little binary building (it just takes time and patience).
I'm playing this morning with an O2 Joggler which has a Debian Bullseye Lite OS install running LMS V8.3.1, Local Player Plugin and Jivelite.
If buying a raspberry pi, I would recommend to use an approved reseller (no price gauging allowed) and take advantage of the guarentee that is offered.
If you buy second hand then be prepared to lose money if it fails (they do sometime fail).
Putting the device into a case is harder than getting LMS running on it afterwards.
When problems arise with pCP (or other Pi based system) it is usually when using it as a player or when trying to set it up to access music files from storage systems in the house.
But as a streaming server for internet radio it is really easy to get running.
Paul Webster Author of "Now Playing" plugins covering Radio France (FIP etc), PlanetRadio (Bauer - Kiss, Absolute, Scala, JazzFM etc), KCRW, ABC Australia and CBC/Radio-Canada
and, via the extra "Radio Now Playing" plugin lots more - see https://forums.slimdevices.com/showt...Playing-plugin

Accurate assessment. But the first time may take you a bit longer. If you follow the "how to"s in Michael's second link, column on the left, you can easily be up and running in under an hour, if you don't stop to think about what you are doing (a problem I have). If you do get stuck, do a google search of "squeezebox forums xxxxxx" where xxxxx is your problem, and there will be a thread here on it. I find the web search easier than the forum search.
oh, and note - picoreplayer is changing faster than the "how to's" so the documentation might not look exactly the same as what you see during setup.
Ronnie's comment on buying from a reseller is a good one, but you might not find one. While a pi 4 is ideal, I have one server (only) running on a 3b+ and it's fine. You should be able to find a 3b+ easier and cheaper. Then when the pi supply issue is resolved (?) you can get a 4 from a reseller.

Is there an easy way to set up a Windows 10/11 laptop to come out of sleep mode when using LMS ?
Some Squeezebox devices will send a "Wake-On-LAN" packet to the server PC when they are put into play mode. Generally, Windows can be configured to respond to this:

They're taking the p*** with those prices, don't encourage them. I think my Pi4 was £54.
If you like I can send you a Pi3B (as mentioned by Michael above) in a clear case, complete with micro SD card with LMS installed, and a power supply, free of charge, something to play with until Pi4 prices come down.
Send it back if you eventually get a Pi4, or make me an offer if you decide it's powerful enough for your needs.
If you can install and configure LMS on a laptop, you can easily do the same on a Raspberry Pi.
Loads of willing helpers on these forums.

Do you know which devices ? Boom and Touch per chance ?
