I was able to eliminate to choppiness by substantially increasing the "Minimum Synchronization Adjustment" settings for these players. That, or at least the adjustments are infrequent enough that I don't notice. I also don't notice that the players really drift apart even with the larger MSA. Interestingly a group of three Duets don't seem to need this adjustment
Now, I'm really liking Group Player!
So much so that today I added code to Squeezelite-X's Denon AVR control functionality to automatically power on and configure the inputs on all the AVRs associated with all the players in the group when I play something on a group player. Extremely limited audience for this feature, but for me an many times a day use case, haha. I have 5 Denon-based systems in the house. I select the "Upstairs" group player, hit play, and "boom" all the right Denon AVRs turn on, all the volumes set the way I want and it is playing everywhere in the house. I don't have turn everything on and select the right inputs. This just cracks me up, haha.
