In fact, I'd argue it's less legible from a distance using the default huge
font. Too fat--like bold font. If you replace the default, then yes, I'd
say it can be way more legible. Also, some of the "ascii art" versions of
certain characters were very difficult to figure out in the old display.

I think it's also brighter--and has more levels at low brightness... in
general, I can't imagine going back.

Everyone's eyesight is a bit different - I agree that "light but big
characters" could be easier to read for some, as opposed to "large and
bold".

Fortunately, Squeezebox fonts are easily changed..

And definitely, yes, we can control the brightness arbitrarily with the
new display - even down to very low levels. The server only exposes
four brightness levels now, but this could be changed.
