View Full Version : wired to wireless problem

I'm having problems with my new wired squeezebox going through a
linksys ap.

Basically, this is a my network setup:
I have my Tivo and new wired squeezebox going through a hub that is
connected to a linksys ap
(http://www.linksys.com/products/product.asp?grid=33&scid=38&prid=558).
The Tivo has no problems accessing the network, but the squeezebox can't
seem to connect (won't get the ip address from the dhcp server, and
can't find the slimserver). Even if I connect the squeezebox directly
to the AP, it can't find the slimserver. Now, if I put a network cable
from my wired network to the squeezebox, then everything works (but it's
a pain, since my network is upstairs, and my living room with squeezebox
is downstairs). I tried my old slimp3 device, and that had problems too,
so it's not just the squeezebox

I read in the archives, and this is the setup for at least one person
who had this setup working. Just wondering if anyone had any idea of
what the problem might be.

Thanks,

John,

This sounds like a firewall issue, since the network connectivity seems
to be fine.

I don't think it is a firewall isue, because a) I don't have firewall
inside my wireless network, and b) Tivo doesn't seem to have a problem
picking up the dhcp provided ip address (and it's sitting on the same
segment as the squeezebox).

John,

Do you have a firewall on your computer running SlimServer? Perhaps
the built-in firewall in Windows XP or Mac OS X?

Hi Dean,

Nope, the slimserver runs on my server (with my dhcp server) on a Debian
Linux box.

Actually, I did find out what the problem was (after reading a message
from Mark Graham in "Need help with a couple of slimserver issues").
Seems squeezebox (and it's predecessor slimp3, since I tried both),
aren't well shielded against interference. I moved the squeezebox up to
my bedroom, where I have a minisystem and had the exact same setup
(squeezebox to the linksys wireless), and now it works fine. Seems the
inteference from tv/receiver/speakers/whatever is disrupting the
squeezebox enough that the networking doesn't work properly if you
connect it to the wireless ap (note that my Tivo works fine on the same
segment). It's weird that just putting a cat5 wire to it makes it work
fine, though...

Guess I'm going for wired for now, then...
