I've been trying to set up NPR programs in slimserver now that wma streaming is working (at least for windows users). It seems like I'm 90% there, but I'm either missing something or there's a bug. I initially set this up using playlist files pointing to a php page I made that automatically redirects to the latest version of the NPR files, but am still having trouble with it even when typing the desired URL straight into the slimserver Internet Radio web interface. The problem is this: slimserver will load the queue of files as specified in NPR's WAX file and start playing the first file but after exactly 1 minute slimserver will start playing the second file in the queue, then after one more minute it will proceed to the third and so on. I have tried creating both pls and m3u playlists and in both cases have specified a negative track length, but the behavior persists.

Try this URL to duplicate the issue:

http://www.npr.org/dmg/dmg.php?prgCode=ATC&showDate=16-November-2004&segNum=&mediaPref=WM&getAd=1

Perhaps slimserver doesn't handle WAX files properly? Or am I doing something wrong? I'd greatly appreciate any help. I enjoy this device immensely and being able to listen to NPR shows on-demand would be a real treat.

I should add that I'm using the latest nightly build of SlimServer and am
running it on a windows 2000 machine. Any thoughts?

I'm just resurrecting this thread (ha--I guess it never really had much life
anyway...) to mention that this problem still hasn't been resolved. Has
anyone given the URL in the original post a try? any thoughts?
suggestions?

Okay, I've had a look at this and I don't think that it's the WAX file
that's the problem, particularly. I mean, I don't think Slim has said
anything about supporting WAX, but the couple of tests I've tried have
suggested that's not the source of the problem.

I downloaded the WAX file to my desktop and opened it with a text
editor, taking a look at all the mms streams. I checked out the first
stream, which is
mms://wm.npr.na-central.speedera.net/wm.npr.na-central/atc/20041116_atc_01.wma

Pasting this file into the Internet Radio page on the Slimserver
allows me to listen to just the first 45 seconds (not a minute) of the
file before it abruptly stops. There's an http version of this stream
in the WAX file, which I also tried, with the same result. On a
hunch, I downloaded the http WMA file, and found it to be less than
200 bytes, containing two versions of this same url:
http://63.210.103.12:80/wm.npr.na-central/atc/20041116_atc_01.wma?MSWMExt=.asf
and not an actual WMA file in the usual sense.

I this url had the same effect on my Squeezebox as the first ones, and
didn't get me any closer. I tried opening the url in WinAmp and Media
Player Classic instead of WMP 10 to see if there would be any
difference, but they both played the file correctly. I also notice
that after the Slimserver stops playing a certain file once, it's a
while before I can get even the first 45 seconds of that url to play
again.

So, I don't think it's a WAX problem. I think it's an issue with
decoding whatever method NPR uses to make their streams. It seems
that somewhere in there has got to be pure unadulterated WMA stream,
and maybe if we could get to that we'd be able to more easily play the
tracks.

I've attached the output of my attempt to play one of the news stories
using -d_source. You can see a ton of "would have blocked, will try
again later" errors, and I have no idea what they mean. But there's a
ton of them when the file starts, then you can see between
14:37:53.1433 and 14:38:48.9214 is the window where the file actually
played.
