View Full Version : Android 4.2: any controllers work on it?

I've updated my Google Asus Nexus 7 tablet to the recently released Android 4.2. Both Orange Squeeze and the Logitech controller don't seem to work any longer. They are only able to select the Nexus as a player and when I try to change the player they crash.

Android 4.2 includes multi-user functionality. I have set up thee user accounts on the tablet.

I've restarted the tablet a few times but not reinstalled the apps (yet).

Anyone else experiencing this?

It's probably the multi user thing. Didn't set up anything here and it works for me (both OrangeSqueeze and SqueezeCommander)

Have reinstalled the Logitech app. Now it crashes (stops) s soon as I OK the license agreement.
Orange Squeeze has got better now but the preview version will not list one of my players and the bottom of the widget is chopped off.
Squeezer seems fine (but only appears to be designed to control a single player?)
Squeeze Display can't find server.

The widget problem is a known issue -- half-finished feature. But I'm not sure what's going on with it not listing your players. Care to turn on verbose logging and get log reports to me at support@orangebikelabs.com? PM me or contact me directly if you run into issues with those.

I've got an updated preview coming out very soon, so I'd love to fix the issue you mention.

FWIW, I'm testing on 4.2 now and not seeing any 4.2-specific problems.

Have turned on verbose logging but can't find the send logs function.

Preview version: When I touch the 'players' menu item only the Nexus (this device) is listed. I can only get the other players to list by selecting 'stop service' for the Nexus.

The current version lists all 5 of my players when I select the 'players' menu.

Yes, I'm seeing the same, if SqueezePlayer is started, then that's the only player listed.

Yes, same for me on my Nexus 7, although it works fine on my Android phone.

I've got a Nexus 7 running 4.2 and the Logitech Squeezebox app works fine for me, controlling 2 x Squeezebox 3 and 1 x Squeezebox Touch.

I have a Nexus 7 with Orange Squeeze, Squeeze Commander, Squeeze Control, and the Logitech Squeezebox controller all working fine. I have only one account. The 4.2 upgrade messed with my root permissions but apart from that no problems.

Hmm, interesting. I can't duplicate this, but there have been a lot of changes since the builds you are running.

Anyone who sees this problem, please PM or email if you have the time and inclination to install a one-off build to test and see if the problem still exists in the development tree.

Thanks!

The next preview build will have a "send logs" option on Android 4.1+. Devices with earlier versions of Android can use the app CatLog.

For now, your best bet would be to try the magic incantation of holding down your device power button + volume up + volume down, which generates a system report and allows you to send it via email or save to Google Drive, etc. It is *not* easy to do, in my experience, but I eventually got it after a few minutes.

Logitech's controller now works and does not crash on the license screen. Someone here said there had been an app update but I can find no evidence of this (either on my Nexus or on the Play app store)

just to be clear 1.2.9 is working fine.

PM sent.

I've lost patience with the Logitech app
On my Nexus 7, I cannot get past the agreement screen. Uninstalled, rebooted, installed at least a dozen times.
On my Android phone, the Logitech app runs, but as soon as I tap the bar with the player name at the top to change players, it crashes, everytime.

Pah.

Mine's worked fine until the 4.2 update and set up of multiple users. Then I had the same problem. Now (miraculously?) it is OK again.

I find the Logitech one useful for full settings functionality, but it's lack of portrait mode is painful.

Can't you change this > Settings > Advanced > Screen Layout?

What? Within the app's own settings? Never thought of looking there. I though the thing was just a skin and pretty much the same as the web offering.
I'll check when I get the Nexus back on my home network.

Yes, from within the apps settings, I can't be more specific, as the app won't run on my Nexus 7, but that's what I see on my phone app.

The Android 4.2 update is really a dud. Very, very poor quality, wouldn't blame that on the Apps.

Forgetting the month of December aside, my Nexus 7 now reboots every few hours even if I do nothing at all.

And this is even Google's "own" device, let's hope other manufacturers have better QA.

I'm very impressed with the multi-user functionality. The only real downside I've found is that the much treasured BBC iPlayer is not available for it and using automatic screen brightness causes screen flicker. Better behaved than most recent iOS updates that have cumulatively reduced the speed of my iPhone to a crawl.

Which iPhone model? With iOS I actually found 6 - maps aside - a pretty good release that caused very few issues, but they should not have released it for the 3GS, it needs too much memory.
iOS 5 was pretty bad from a quality POV although it was technically a huge step forward - probably like Android 4.2. I understand that adding more features and capabilities adds the risk of initially having more bugs but seeing Google's own flagship device crash without any reason every few hours is pretty bad, IMHO, haven't seen an iPhone crash for years now.
And the December thing is also a pretty bold QA oversight although I don't think it's a really big issue.

Which iPhone model?
3GS with iOS 5.1.1.
I've avoided updating to 6 due to experience with last 3 (2?) major updates and the maps. I was waiting till the iPhone 5 came out to see whether to persevere with Apple or jump to Android. I'm still undecided even though the iPhone 5 is quite underwhelming.

BTW. iPeng is unusable on it. Crashes a lot, mainly when adjusting player volume.

People, PLEASE turn on crash reporting if you are seeing things like that.
Since iPeng 2.0 I have ZERO (not even ONE) crash reports for iPeng under iOS 5.x!
Do you use a jailbreak?
I'll add HockeyApp in the next release but what I can see from my betas it looks similarly stable.
There are a few crashes under iOS 6 but even they are fewer than with _any_ pre-2.0 iPeng release.

The December thing?

They forgot the month of December in the contacts App (January follows on November). Big noise about it in the blogshpere and press but you only need it to set birthdays or appointments from contacts, so probably not a _really_ big thing.
Still quite a bit of an oversight :)

Nope. I'll turn on crash reporting when I next attempt to use it at home (and as crashing is so predictable I will get one sent to you immediately!).

Very Good. Much appreciate that.
But please update to the latest iPeng version(2.0.3) before you do if you haven't. Until I add HockeyApp I only get crash reports from Apple and they only send them for the latest release.

Hmm. OK. Slightly embarrassed. It doesn't crash at all now. I'm not sure what's going on. A couple of weeks ago (or more?) I gave up using it as it crashed most times I adjusted the volume of a player. Now it seems fine.
Sorry for false alarm.

Was that probably the 2.0? It had two issues around the main volume slider, one of which was that it could issue skip commands and the other that it could send a command that crashed iPeng. Fixed at least since 2.0.2.

ModelCitizen

Was that probably the 2.0? Possibly. Due to problems with logging in to the app store I didn't upgrade any apps for quite some time.
