logitech-leaves-squeezebox-fans-wondering-whats-next

This article on cnet has freaked me out... My squeezebox radio is quite new and I m quite attached to it
Please someone tell me the server will be alive and kicking for more than the 3-6 months logitech seems to imply on cnet

Couldn t we simply get an upgrade to the new Radio? I gate bad investments... Please reassure me

Can't be done it seems, you simply seem hell bent on spreading your unfounded FUD wihtout any regard to available information or the replies you've alreade gotten on this forum.

At this time, there are no plans to stop maintaining mysqueezebox.com or the local server, parts of the CNET article is based on rumors and thoughts/fears posted by community members.
We will likely get less bug corrections, but as long as Logitech are having a lot or Radio's within warranty period they are likely going to keep both mysqueezebox.com and LMS working.

You are going to be able to upgrade Squeezebox Radio to a UE Smart Radio through a firmware upgrade, but I wouldn't recommend doing it at this time because it have a lot less functionality than what your Squeezebox Radio currently have.

This reassured me.... All i do with my squeezebox is internetradio.... Would you think those functionnalities will be avsilable in the upgrade? I do nothing elsevwith it... Though i d love to be able to access older streams....

FUD = Fear - Uncertainty and Doubt.

I first heard the term back in the 70's from vendors trying to compete with IBM in the mainframe market place.

Interesting comments on the VortexBox forums from one of the admins there about Logitech's possible intention of future server software supporting both sets of products (UE and squeezebox):
http://vortexbox.org/threads/4401-Continued-support-for-squeezebox-LMS?p=28145&viewfull=1#post28145

It is unsubstantiated though.

Nice reference!!! I've heard the same thing in more than one sales meeting!

I think everyone just need to be a bit cautious regarding what and who to trust regarding information related to Logitech's plans, unless something is posted directly by a Logitech representative it should probably be treated as a rumor. The unofficial information I've got regarding Logitech's plans are a bit different than what's posted in that VortexBox thread. I really hope the new UE Smart Radio products become a success but I also have serious doubts based on some things I've heard.

As Erland says this is not from an official source just because the UE 10 beta can be started with two separate startup scripts one for UE and one for LMS functionality is an heroic effort by the devs probably doable because of the code similarity ( UE is a modified LMS ) and old code can *for now* coexist .

I think our vortexbox friend does a very positive *interpretation* of this fact .

Who knows if the devs are allowed to keep doing this or they will have the time, and technically develop UE in such a way that it is squeezebox compatible in the future ? One advantage of dumping legacy support is that you can do something new , Logitech migth pursue this route who knows ?

But our little rumour mill starts to look like kremlinology from the cold war :)

Most of us does not know anything , it can be so that some third party devs have more unofficial info than us users , but probably only people that would not spill the beans on the forum , and again even that could be useless in the end .
