View Full Version : Screensaver When Squeezebox Is Off

Do any of the screensavers work when the Squeezebox is turned off? I
personally don't find the screensavers very useful as they apparently
function only when the device is in "play" mode. Neat, yes. Useful, no.
This seems illogical for the following reasons...

1) While in "play," I like to see the current track info and I don't want a
screensaver getting in the way of it.

2) While in "play," the bits on the screen are probably changing around
(especially if set to Now Playing) so a "screensaver" isn't really
necessary because "burn-in" is quite unlikely in this mode.

3) When the unit is "off," without a screensaver "burn-in" is actually more
likely because the unit sits for long periods with a fairly static display,
unless you turn the brightness down to nothing which is how I currently have
it set. For me, this is the time when I wouldn't mind the unit doing
something other than just displaying the date and time which is nice but i
have a thousand other clocks around the house so another isn't really
necessary. That LineX thing would be neat and draw some attention when the
unit is off.

I think I have read that "burn-in" isn't very likely on the displays used by
SlimDevices so that's a good thing. And of course I am not suggesting that
the screensavers not work in "play" mode, but it would be super nice to
have the option for a screensaver to function when the unit is in "off"
mode.

Anyone out there agree?

Screensavers do run even if a player is not actively playing content. It
seems like you're asking for behavior where a player times out to Now
Playing if it is playing audio and a screensaver if it is not playing
audio. This seems quite reasonable and I'd encourage you to file an
enhancement bug at http://bugs.slimdevices.com.

FWIW, the "off" state is not necessarily a power-saving state other than
the fact that the default off brightness is set to a low value. You can
achieve the same effect and still see a screensaver by making sure that
"idle" brightness is set to a low value. Both "off" and "idle"
brightness can be configured on the Player Settings > Display page of
the SlimServer web interface.

that's been done before, but by user complaint the screensaver was then changed
to work even when playing because there is always the option of setting 'now
playing' as the screensaver.
