Version 1 (just in case it needs updating

I am running version 7.5.1 on my NSA-310 and am running upgraded versions of firmware on my duet controller and receiver taken from newer versions of squeezebox, here is how i did it.

Turn on the telnet backdoor by going to the following URL

http://x.x.x.x/zyxel/cgi-bin/remote_help-cgi?type=backdoor

you can now telnet to your NAS, use root + the admin password

How to copy new firmware to receiver

All the firmware for the squeezebox devices are stored in
/i-data/md0/.zyxel/zy-pkgs/gui/SqueezeCenter/Firmware

I used a windows laptop and installed 7.6 of squeezebox to get the following receiver firmware files for copying to my NAS
receiver_77.bin
receiver.version

The receiver.version file states what versions are be upgraded, here is a copy of the contents

# Receiver firmware

# from to
# from1..from2 to

1..77 77

# future versions may be downgraded to this one
* 77

The previous receiver.version file had

# Receiver firmware

# from to
# from1..from2 to

1..65 65

# future versions may be downgraded to this one

* 77

How to copy new firmware to controller

Hopefully we will no longer need to muck about with copying firmware files around on the Zyxel NSA310 and similar boxes as a new firmware is apparently due on the 20th of the month.

I asked Zyxel support about their plans to update the Squeezebox package and received the following reply:
"Hello

There is a firmware up grade out on the 20th of the month to update and fix many issues. Squeezebox Server is one of the updates.

Regards,
Steven Mann
ZyXEL Technical Support engineer"

Not sure why the Squeezebox package needs to come with a firmware update, but we'll see.

Hi Diyfiddler !

The 20th has been and gone, they dont seem to have put any new updates up. Could you respond back to your support contact and ask if there is a revised date.

Many thanks

I've already responded to Zyxel support, but there has been no reply this time.

However in the mean time I've found on a German Zyxel forum (zyxelforum.de) updated information that suggests the firmware version 4.4 will be out on the 10th Feb this year:
http://zyxelforum.de/firmware-updates-nsa-220-220plus-210-221-und-320-neu-t1706.html

The poster appears to be involved in the software development process so hopefully this is correct this time!

Looks like the firmware update will not be until the 28th Feb now (assuming it is not delayed any further).

The firmware release was meant to be the 10th Feb now the 17th Feb. I have been told by Zyxel that the firmware update does not upgrade the Squeezecenter, this will be released at the beginning of March.

Been looking at the NSA-310 as a cheap solution for my SB server (so that I have a box that is always on)... so managed to get this for 30 (diskless) today - will need to wait a few days for it to arrive :)

Anyway back to the point... I've been following this thread about the v4.4 release schedule, and came across a post on the zyxel forum.

So it appears that v4.4 is on some kind of "trial/prerelease release" at the moment, and I haven't seen much feedback about the new firmware.

Here is the link to the firmware in question...

Once logged in with the FTP username/password supplied, I can also see a number of packages in:

Specifically:
02/14/2012 03:57PM 1,552,753 BackupPlanner_001_arm_007.zpkg

02/14/2012 03:57PM 13,183 ZYPKG_INFO.tgz

Now without actually owning a NSA-310 yet I can't test this new firmware... also I am not sure that the above packages can be installed directly - or they have to be downloaded via the web.

In addition, as the release date for v4.4 has slipped, I'm wondering if a bug or two has been found in this version - and the Zyxel team are working on a fix - so might not be the best option using this version until it's officially released.

Anyway I thought I'd share the info.

Have also ordered one of these and delivery is tomorrow. It appears to have wake on lan, not sure how this works on a nas but for 30 it seems a good buy. I have downloaded the firmware and will try it over the week end.

After upgrading to 4.40 you firmware you would still need to upgrade the packages. If you did download the packages (*.zpkg) from the link below you would need to copy them to

/i-data/md0/admin/zy-pkgs

you would then need to copy the ZYPKG_INFO file inside the ZYPKG_INFO.tgz to

/i-data/md0/admin/zy-pkgs

you should then be able to see the new packages in Applications/Packages in the web front end. If you don't upgrade the packages then you will still have the original ones. As stated you will have to install the packages from scratch after installing a new O/S (as with previous updates).

You then should have Squeezecenter 7.7.1 installed

What to say about the NSA310....

It has arrived, been flashed to v4.4 firmware and is running SB 7.7 server. It all appears to work pretty well. I have seen the CPU load get a bit high on occasions, but streaming to two receivers appears to not load the unit that much.

All in all, a great purchase for 30. Time to load up the unit with more music... and hope it copes!

I also have installed ver 4.40 + Squeezebox 7.7.1 and the NAS seems stable and faster (even scanning / rescanning is faster) . I thought however that 7.7.1 supported Video (like the windows version) however it doesn't seem to (unless someone knows otherwise). A little disappointed if it doesn't as i was poised to but a Logitech Revue or similar.

Have just bought a NSA310 - just getting into Squeezebox stuff after setting up a temporary Vortexbox, wanted something more power efficient and quiet. Have also bought an old slimdevices squeezebox (v1 I think, no wifi, firmware 40).

Problem: Can't play back FLAC when streaming from the NSA310 (firmware 4.22, 7.7zypkg005). Just get the error

[12-03-08 19:15:01.7993] Slim::Player::Song::open (409) Error: Couldn't create command line for flc playback for [file:///i-data/md0/.media/squeezecenter/music/Ahab/kmvt/05%20-%20Where%27s%20the%20One%20You%20Love.flac]

Squeezebox will play back flac from the Vortexbox.

Has anyone managed to get flac playback from NSA310 to an old squeezebox - any tips?

Thanks,

Jon.

Hi,

Just got a SB touch. Already had the nsa-310. Iam right now using the SBT with my laptop but would like to configure the server on the nsa-310.

Historically I had all my music files placed one a folder in the public dir of the 310. How do I configure the SB Server on the NSA-310 to point to this location now?
Not being very technical would appreciate clear instructions.

All my CD's were ripped as FLAC using MediaMonkey and play fine on my SB radio and Duet, have you tried using windows squeezeplay as a test.

You are playing those as native FLAC no faffing around with streaming them as WAV/PCM ?

That's the problem I've realised. The SB I've got is old and doesn't natively support FLAC - it needs them streamed as WAV/PCM. If I stream from a windows or vortexbox server then I can set the filetype.

The NSA 310 is missing the required flac (& lame) decoder binary - I can't set the file types to anything other than native. Do the required binaries exist for this hardware - if so, where can I get them, and where do I copy them to?

Mised that the SB1 then it be WAV .

You need FLAC SoX and LAME but before painstakingly hunt down those .

Some have special patches for working better with squeezeboxes so you may have to build them from source .

Investigate if the CPU on the NAS have the required grunt to run this ? this is usually the reason for why there is no bin's for it .

FLAC is usually the least demanding then SoX , LAME for the mp3 stuff usually want's a fully functional fpu .

A Touch maybe :) they go for special prices these days

Yes, thought they might be difficult as I haven't found the right google search terms yet.

I need to decide what to do. Stick with the SB1 and use windows or vortexbox to serve, or upgrade the client and use the NSA310 as a server. I was quite taken with Vortexbox when I tried it, so that's the way I'm leaning at the moment. Doesn't prevent me from adding a touch later if I want (have already bought 2 duet controllers).

Thanks for your help.

hi, i want to connect this ZyXEL NSA310 with logitech media server/sqeezcentre installed (haven't bought one yet) to SBT via network cable, instead of having the NAS connected to router and SBT connected wirelessly. i have read that the sound quality is improved further by direct connection.
however, by doing this i would have to select wired connection on the SBT and i guess this would disable the internet connection. so would the SBT still function without wifi/internet connection, as the zyxel has no ability to add a usb wifi dongle?

if possible, could someone with zyxel plug the NAS direct into SBT to see if it still functions (without wifi/internet). i don't wanna spend out on it if it doesn't work, i want to be sure, not just with responses from people who 'think' it'll work (no offence anyone else). i just want a stand alone player without internet (with only a hard drive connected, the built in squeeze server functions quite slowly, so i want to have the NAS with server installed to take the load off SBT). and also report back if, as others have said, there's improvement in sound quality. cheers

Hi,

Is it worth updating the firmware on the NAS nsa310 to the latest version. I currently have 4.22 and the latest is 4.4. I do get a prompt asking me if I want to upgrade. In this case is the SB server also upgraded or do I need to do anything to retain my music library?

Sometimes its best to follow the principle of ' If it works dont touch' . Any opinions on this upgrade?

Upgraded. All went well. The MySQL and SB Server had to be reinstalled in package mgmt. Some of the issues I had also resolved and library scan is faster.
