View Full Version : [ANNOUNCE] It's all about knowing your music! SqueezePad 1.9.0 hits the App Store

If you are like me, music is not only about the tunes, but also about bands and artists.
Unfortunately always looking them up and learning about them is (was) a tedious task ... open the browser, surf to your favorite search engine, enter your keywords ... and if you want to look somewhere else start all over.

Until now!
SqueezePad 1.9.0 comes with an integrated browser ready to look up all relevant content about your currently playing song, artist or their album with a simple tap.

You've never been faster looking up your music!
SqueezePad comes with a wealth of pregenerated links to Wikipedia, Google, YouTube, Last.FM, AllMusic, Facebook and many more.
You cannot miss the new browser feature - just use the new button below the playlist button to the right.

A picture with a Google image search is attached, find more on my blog:

Now it hit the store upgraded now thanks.

Btw why do you anounce in the "general" forum not third party software, it will soon disappear under all "junk"

Very cool! Took me a minute to figure out how to access this new function (it is a "globe" icon/tab just below the "playlist" tab on the right side of the screen).

Not if people keep on saying how much they like the new feature to keep me motivated for extending SqueezePad :D

Nice idea, but the rendering of the web-pages results in a microscopic font and zooming\scrolling is a right pain!

Can you not take the XML feed from Wikipedia then render it more sensibly using your own layout?

You can do a 2 finger zoom, but I agree , browser inside apps tend get you this :-/ not readable right away must zoom directly, well with glasses on and squinting but it is headache inducing.

Would a link to bandcamp be a good idea ?

Nice idea, but the rendering of the web-pages results in a microscopic font and zooming\scrolling is a right pain!

I tried various options before. The problem is that I found all other possible options more cumbersome.

For instance I tried to fake the browser to behave like an iPhone.
Though there are bigger fonts then, most web-pages had hardcoded sizes, so didn't use the full width.
Or on Last.FM the site was mostly rendered as text only and didn't show album covers on the title page.

Same problem with telling the truth 'I am an iPad browser'. Then most sites used iPad size, which is to big for the current browser window size. So one had to scroll a lot from left to right.
You can still see this on the YouTube page which is bigger than the width. Here I had to keep the iPad signature to prevent YouTube using Flash which would not have worked on iPad.
This would have happened to most other sites as well.

So in the end I decided to start with a small zoom factor, so one at least could see the full size page first and the instantly zoom to the section one is interested in.

If it's still too small you can open the page in Safari with one more tap. Remember that you can return to SqueezePad quite fast by doing a double tap on the home button to see the multitasking bar.

By the way: I just realized that on iOS5 my 'hack' to hide the iPad signature in the browser does not work anymore. So for a short time (until I provide SqueezePad 1.9.2) you can see how it might have been with pages rendering a little bit bigger.
Do use the chance to tell me your opinion then!

(Before upgrading to iOS5 on Wednesday, be aware of the possible other issue though: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?p=662488#post662488)

Would a link to bandcamp be a good idea ?

How big is the chance there to find information about most of the music you own?
Did some test searches and it didn't provide good results with my library.

Don't you think that for the more unknown bands the normal Google search would suffice?

version 1.9.2 of SqueezePad was released to the AppStore some minutes ago.
It's a minor release with the following enhancements:

the browser feature now uses google.com rather than google.de on artist searches for all non-german users
support for CustomBrowse menus with three lines
on the settings page of SqueezePad you now have a button to open the settings page of your Squeezebox-Server in Safari

I was skeptical of the Web searching function, but found that I often use it, mostly with Wikipedia as the default service.

Very cool indeed.

Yes, the font is extremely small. As you say, it may be difficult to find a workaround for this problem, but I hope that one can be implemented in time.

I know, one could keep a magnifying glass handy, but that would be an inelegant fix.

Thanks again for your work on this app.

The solution is to use the arrow icon at the upper right to view web pages in Safari, with more screen real estate and a larger font.

I did some more search, but only to realize that the iOS browser I can use does not have any more means to be manipulated other then "dear little browser window, please load this page".
Let's hope for iOS6 (*sigh*) that then there are at least means to read and set the zoom level, so that SqueezePad could adopt automatically to the user and their preferred ways to see pages.

In the meantime one has to zoom here and there - or - like Ron Olson mentioned just open the big browser window with the arrows on the top right corner.
Don't forget that via the multitasking bar (double tap the home button) one can return pretty fast back to SqueezePad to try the other pregenerated links.

Version 1.9.3 is available on the AppStore now:

SqueezePad now will start much faster from the background (in previous version this only worked for the first 10 minutes)

Hi, bluegaspode. Got the latest version and can't seem to get the "Context Menu" to work. On your site you say:

"A long touch on a menu item, the big coverart or a playlist entry brings up the context-menu."

Doesn't seem to work. A long touch on the cover art only gives me the title of the song that is currently playing. If I search on a song a long touch on it does nothing. If I long touch a playlist entry I get a little menu that includes a MusicIP Mix option - is that the problem?

I'm using SB3, SS 7.3.3 and this is my first use of Squeezepad.

Or am I doing something wrong?

Hi Rick,

As of the App description SqueezePad officially only supports version 7.4 to 7.7 of the server.
While SqueezePad sort of also works with 7.3.x , context menus (as you realized) are not supported on this 3 years old server version. Also playback and server autodetection wouldn't work there.

It's a very tough task already to be compatible with 7.4 to 7.7 (and to test it) as in each major version Logitech introduced a lot of changes.

Please upgrade to at least version 7.4.x.
The latest version 7.7.1 is also very robust and much much faster than 7.3

Thanks, I've hung on to 7.3.3 for so long as it was the last version where the Player via headphone jack worked well with the Controller. Now that you (and iPeng) have enabled playback I guess it might be time to upgrade (but I'm very afraid!)

Cheers,

iPeng works with 7.3.3 but I would also not recommend it, and some functionality will be missing.
I like 7.7.1 quite well, it's a pretty stable release unless you try to use iTunes artwork integration or have weird tags and use a Mac. But that's kind of the same level of issues 7.3.3 has, too.

Hi Bluegaspode,
I bought my wife an ipad for Christmas, and to make it a more enjoyable present I downloaded Squeezepad. Excellent app, but need help with one small issue.
Using Napster,if I try to use the "search" function, the keyboard pops up as it should, and I type in the artist/track/album I wish to search for. Unfortunately, I can then get no further,as the area I need to "click" on to complete the search is obscured somewhere beneath either the keyboard or the album art of the previously played track.
I realise I'm new to the ipad, and I'm probably missing something obvious, but any help appreciated.

Trev.

I just double checked to make sure - this does not happen with Squeezecommander

Hi Trev,

I'm not sure I do understand your problem yet :)
When the keyboard opens for a search field, on the right hand side there should be a "Send" button on the keyboard.

So just enter the word and hit 'Send' ?

Could you make a screenshot otherwise (hold the power button and the home button of the iPad at the same time. A picture of the screen will be put into your pictures folder - which you can download by syncing to iTunes).

FWIW, I am running 7.3.4, with the latest SqueezePad and iPeng versions. No problems thus far.

Hi Stefan,
Thanks for the reply. I'm at work at the moment so I'll do as you asked tomorrow morning if needed. I must admit I was looking for the "send" button where it appears on the squeezecommander screen, rather than on the keyboard itself ( I was in a bit of a rush at the time )

SqueezePad 1.9.5 is available on the AppStore now.

While version 1.9.4 was the first version to really support Retina resolution, in this old version I had to focus on the parts which didn't take too long to implement to make you happy with your new iPad. Now some more time has passed and I have been able to look into all remaining corners of the App as well.

all album art thumbnails (left menu and playlist) now are using twice the resolution on iPad3. A joy for the eyes! I also found a nasty bug which made the icons look blurry on iPad 1+2 - even though they use the same resolution as before, they are much sharper now.
ALL icons are optimized for the new iPad now. Gosh - this was a huge amount of work - every icon had to be redrawn from scratch, because you cannot just scale up the old icons. But it was worth it, definitely! I'm still in the middle of moving (tomorrow being the main day where all the furniture goes to the new rooms) but I'm planning to provide some comparisons of old and new icons on my blog (http://www.squeezepad.com/blog/) . So keep watching it, hope to have it finished in about two weeks.
the download of the big albums covers is much faster now.

I hope you enjoy this new release as much as I do!

SqueezePad 1.9.6 is available now.

It focusses on improving the overall stability.

better performance of album view: users with larger libraries (>=40.000 tracks) reported, that with the Retina release the album view got a bit slow (even after caching the list) - on rare occasions SqueezePad even quit when trying to show albums. I have now a test library with 50.000 tracks (thanks to erland, why created this library some time ago) and officially test SqueezePad against that.
fixed some occasional crashes. In the last bugfix release I also integrated a technique, which allowed you to send me crashes directly should they ever happen. This allowed me to get some better insight and statistics about SqueezePads crashes in the wild. The results were quite interesting. Though I never received a report about crashes via my normal support channels (this forum or mail), statistics showed, that SqueezePad annoyed around 5 users per day worldwide. While I consider this a very very low count - it's still too much of course - so these bugs have been fixed and of course I keep watching.

Have a lot of fun with this new version of SqueezePad!

Now on with watching football :D ... Germanys first match in the european championship ...

SqueezePad 1.9.7 is available now on the AppStore

Is can be seen in the version number, its a bugfix release addressing some of the currently reported issues:

on large collections the indexbar in the menu sometimes disappeared. This has been fixed
after 15min idle/sleep time of the iPad, SqueezePad often briefly showed a red "server disconnected" screen. This has been optimized
fixed some rare crashes

Have a lot of fun with this new version of SqueezePad!
