Andrew,

Have you got a load of other stuff running on the box? I'm surprised that it's
swapping with 512MB RAM. What does the output of the "free" command look like?

Here's what I get on my server (Dual 1GHZ PIII, 1.5GB RAM, Fedora Core 2)

[robin@dude slimserver]$ free -m
total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 1517 600 917 0 171 217
-/+ buffers/cache: 211 1306
Swap: 0 0 0

So, I'm using 600M of memory, but 171M of that is buffer and 217M is cache
leaving 211M actually used.

(I've got apache and mysql running on the same box.)

I probably was not clear. When I moved from the Celeron system, I chose
more RAM for the AMD64 machine. The Celeron was swapping just a bit.

Yes, I have lots of other stuff running on the FC2 AMD64 box -
CommuniGate Pro, SpamAssassin, Apache, dnscache, BIND9, vncserver, LVM2
and more. All of these have been moved from the Dual Celeron system to
the AMD64 system. Here is the AMD64 free:

total used free shared buffers
cached
Mem: 1029048 608808 420240 0 163316
106512
-/+ buffers/cache: 338980 690068
Swap: 1309288 0 1309288

I was purchasing this machine to last the next five years like the
Celeron has worked for the last five. I expect to be adding more things
over the coming years. When SlimDevices comes out with their video
product ;-), I hope to be ready.
