I don't know what else to say.

I sure would like to divert to one of my "backup" SBS machines.

As an IT person for decades I cannot imagine the incompetence that led to the GA of 7.6

If at LEAST the beast known as 7.6 should show another server the players attached so a PREVIOUS version could play SOMETHING !

Otay !

I have one album containing one song. I am trying with several versions of 7.6 that all point to the same music folder.

These versions of 7.6 are both real and virtual machines that worked and played my music to my hardware SB devices until I chose to upgrade.

Maybe if you post some details of your configuration, we could help>

Most important: when I point to another SBS and get the WebUI, the pulldown does not show all <any> of the players attached to the <retartded> SBS server.

This prevents me from using any other SBS machines I had previously and meticulously prepared as backup servers.

PThere are at least two other ways to move players from one server to another: the player menu UI and via the CLI. Have you tried those?

I seem unable to deduce your point. When I want to move players to another server, I go to the new server's WebUI and press the "players" button. Normally, when the source SBS is active, I can use this method. It is not available at this time.

BTW, 7.6 was still 'Pre-caching artwork' 15 hours later. Tremendous performance there !

My experience was horrible too. I went back to 7.54 until the bugs get worked out. I used 7.6 on Windows Home Server with 3 players (Transporter, Duet, Touch). All three updated their firmware without problem, but all the artwork was lost, the web-based interface was FUBAR (doubled text, unreadable menus), Trackstat ratings wouldn't display, and I got numerous "hangs" in the middle of songs. Other problems too, but now I don't remember them all.

I gave up after a day. Maybe the next release will be more robust. I've been through 2-3 years of updates and this is the first one that really hammered my system. Glad I could go back and get everything working again.

I seem unable to deduce your point. The point is this: there have been lots of things broken in this software for years. Sometimes, there's a work-around. If there is a work-around for a particular task, get over it and use the alternate method.

Have you tried a 7.6.1 nightly build ?

As I've understood the main known issues causing part of the library to be missed has been solved in 7.6.1 nightly beta build.
http://downloads.slimdevices.com/nightly/?ver=7.6

So if something else is causing the issues in your setup, and you have the time, I'm sure it would be a great help for the developers if you could provide more information about it.

See here for more details about troubleshooting 7.6.0 and known problems:

I uninstalled (Win/Vista) and installed the nightly from 30 July.

After the only progress in over 1.5 hours was the clock counting, I cancelled the scan. Scanner.exe is still running at 48-50% of CPU and as you can see in the screen shot, server thinks it's done, even though the Pre-caching clock is still incrementing.

Now I will uninstall and remove the directories and try again..

So, I uninstalled and removed prefs and logs and made sure all the program/file directories were gone and then I re-installed the daily for 30 July.

The "initial" scan of the default directory finished and I used the webUI to change the iTunes to NO and to point to the real music directory.

Same result. Hang on Pre-caching artwork. I cancelled the scan from the webUI after only a couple of hours and scanner.exe is doing the same thing: not dying and taking 50% of cpu.

You have to kill scanner.exe manually.

Set scan logging to Debug and check the log file.

To do this in the gui, go to Settings, the Advanced tab, then select Logging in the drop down list. Then go down to "(scan) - All Scan Logging" and set it to Debug. Now perform a "clear and rescan" and check the log file when it starts on the art work and hangs. The last entry should be the problem file.

I have been reading several of these threads recently in the hope of finding a solution ...

Set-up:
SB Touch + Duet, running SB server on Windows 7 (64-bit).
I upgraded to 7.6 last week and within 24/48 hrs both the Controller and Touch required upgrades. In both cases the Downloads failed to work until I had switched the devices off and then restarted them (Controller: hold down on button for 8 seconds; Touch: unplug power lead). I forget exactly when but at some stage in the upgrade process I lost - say - 80-90% of the artwork.

All music files are WMA rips held on an external HDD (USB connection) within 9 genre directories; artwork is from a range of sources, the majority being "found" when the album is ripped. I often divide and amalgamate albums and then will find artwork from various web-sites (e.g. Amazon). Everything is organised in Microsoft Windows Media Player 12 / Windows Explorer.

I have cleared the cache (SB Server Control Panel / Advanced-Cleanup)

From SB Server / Information tab:
Version: 7.6.1 - r32935 @ Fri Jul 29 07:46:37 PDT2011
Library Statistics
Total Tracks: 31,056
Total Albums: 2,479
Total Artists: 408
Total Genres: 12
Total Playing Time: 1573:28:05
Music Scan Details
Discovering files (33929 of 33929) Complete 00:00:25
Scanning new files (31056 of 31056) Complete 01:22:37
Discovering Playlists (1 of 1) Complete 00:00:00
Pre-caching Artwork (2231 of 2231) Complete 00:04:13
The server has finished scanning your music collection.
Total time: 01:27:15 (Monday, August 1, 2011/9:03am)

This morning I uninstalled SB server and downloaded (again) v. 7.6.1-r32935. the scan took nearly 1.5hrs (as above) and I now have - say - 70-80% (guess) of the artwork though the statistics appear to say I should have 90% (= 2231 / 2,479).

Also, whilst I have corrected the genre name via WMA for some rips, one of the Genres (DVD Rip) appears three times (DVD Rip, DVD rip and Dvd Rip) and another Genre (Easy Listening) appears twice (Easy Listening and Easy listening). I have indentified the incorrect names and corrected them (last week) but despite re-scans, etc. these incorrect Genre names won't go away!

Two issues (maybe this second issue is not related to v.7.6) - help?

A third issue ... this is the third or fourth time I've noticed this in the last few days: SB Server does not always keep up with the music. I often play my music on Random (Songs) and, at the moment, the song playing is five tracks after the Music symbol (which is the song showing in the heading) - weird and not welcome. When I close and re-open SB Server the correct track is showing.

AMD with Vista Ultimate. But do you really think this is the issue? ONLY AMD Vista Ultimate users are having this issue and similar issues with 7.6? I doubt it.

I've had my boxes since 2005 (?) and this is the first time I've had issues with any upgrade other than the "normal" problems with plugins after upgrades. I guess I've been lucky in that sense.

Im still running 7.5.5 on my QNAP 419P and it worked fine until weekend. Now my server say that login to my account at Mysbx.com doesnt work. When I login using my computer or my SQB Radios it works fine but not when Squeezebox server tries to do it. Compatibility issue? My clients (2 radio) has been forced to upgrade to 7.6.

I can listen to both my music and the webradio however I need to either login to my Squeezebox server (QNAP)for my music lib and switch the login to MySbx.com on my clients when I what to listen to radio. No seemless integration in the Squeezebox server for both sources at the moment... Hope it will be resolved quickly though a new firmware release and change in MySBX login from previous versions of Sbx servers.

I started by trying to update Fedora and chucked that. That's when I went to my "backup" which is the AMD running vista ultimate. Clearly there are a lot of issues and they may not be platform specific.

Since I develop systems for a living, I always try to change only one thing at a time when testing. I guess the next thing I need to do is to install 7.6 on an <empty> vista business system and see what happens. Of course that machine is Intel...

Well, good luck with that.

I've already spent enough hours on this trying the various fixes posted by everyone including Erland. Nothing seemed to work and precaching artwork continued to hang. I went back to 7.5.

Hopefully with my post of the scanner log and yours also, someone can chime in with a fix. Otherwise I will just wait for the next update. Not even the nightly build of 7.6.1 fixed the issue for me.

Actually, the current Fedora release is 15, but I've never seen much point in having the most current version of Linux for a server that only supports Squeezeboxserver. It was a year and half or so ago that I went from FC8 to FC12, so probably won't mess with another linux upgrade on that machine for another year or even more.

Just temporarily install the server on a PC.
Connect the Touch.
Let it downgrade.
Uninstall the server from PC and use the Touch standalone again.

Nah not worth the hassle. One would think since it is a standalone server it should be able to downgrade if th file is available on a drive connected to it.

- download Fab4.bin from http://update.slimdevices.com/update/firmware/7.5.5/
- copy to USB drive of Touch (root folder)
- Search the Advanced Settings menu of the Touch. Somewhere is an option to search for firmware and it will show you the manually copied firmware.

HA I was JUST going to post I called support and was told to put fab4.bin on an SD card and reboot the Touch. That did the trick. I KNEW there had to be a way of doing it via the Touch's built in server.

Thank you for another way of doing it, MUCH appreciated.

EDIT. I "assume" since there is no USB or SD port on the SB Radio one is stuck with 7.6 till they come out with an updated firmware? And yes I still do not have, nor want, the SB Server installed on my PC.. My Radio is only used for MYSB.com..

EDIT #2 Here is the answer to my own question and for anyone else who has a radio and wishes to roll back to the previous firmware and does NOT have SBS installed:
You can do a firmware rollback on your Squeezebox Radio.

1. Unplug the radio

2. Hold the rewind button

3. Plug back in while holding the rewind button

4. Let go of rewind button when you see Logitech Logo

You should now be on 7.5.4

You need a 7.5 SBS on your network to downgrade it and keep it downgraded.

This can be accomplished by:
- Installing a SBS 7.5 on a PC
or
- Run the built-in SBS inside the Touch after you have downgraded it to 7.5 and connect the Radio to the Touch SBS to downgrade it.

However, in both cases, as soon as the SBS is shutdown the Radio is going to connect to mysqueezebox.com which will ask you to upgrade its firmware to 7.6. I believe, you can abort this upgrade dialog by holding left arrow for a while on the Radio, but I think that's going to be a bit annoying.

Doesn't the 7.6 Radio firmware work reliable ? If not, what are the issues you are having on the firmware side ? I thought it was mainly SBS that had a lot of bug and the firmware itself was in pretty good shape.

Of course, that was not Vista's fault.

I must have joined the Vista party at the just the right time.

P

I've never had problems with Vista and less so than when I had XP. Although I agree that the security prompts are extremely annoying but got used to it I guess.

Why is SBS still proudly declaring that 7.6.0 is now available, considering that 7.6.0 is still a work in progress ?

I'm running 7.5.5 on XP btw.

Are there bug reports at http://bugs.slimdevices.com for the stuff that's still not working for you ?

See the community troubleshooting page for 7.6 for more information about how to find open and solved 7.6.0 bugs and how to register new ones if your problem isn't already registered:

Hi erland,

This looks like bug 17207: http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=17207

Since I have another machine now loaded and a working backup, I'll go back to the box that wouldn't scan and try the latest nightly.

Hi erland,

This looks like bug 17207: http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=17207

Since I have another machine now loaded and a working backup, I'll go back to the box that wouldn't scan and try the latest nightly.

P

So here we go:

Uninstall 7.5.6-32834 <including prefs/logs>

Download 7.6.1-32969.exe <4 Aug>

Restart computer and log-in; open shared folder t: and supply password.

Install 7.6.1-32969

Initial scan finds 23 files in \users\...\music

Open control app & disable iTunes: apply

Go to status tab and return to library tab: disable iTunes change verified.

On library tab/music folder/browse: no drive T:. Manually key T:\music and click apply. SBS reports invalid audiodir. Click browse again and key T:\ into "folder" field. T: directories are displayed. Selected music and OK. Library pane shows t:\music as music folder. Click apply. Go to Status tab and return to library tab. Music folder is now again \users\...\music.

Stop SBS/start SBS and open control app.

Same behavior as above.

Change SBS to "do not start" and turn-off UAC and restart computer.

Repeat of above except SBS "sees" the T: drive and allows me to select "t:\music" as the music folder. Clear and rescan starts as expected.

See the first attachment: Pre-caching was stuck at 37 after only a few seconds.

Second attachment shows Scanner.exe churning right along at around 50% of CPU.

So I powered-down the T: drive <which holds the music> and Scanner.exe doesn't seem to care..

Also attached are the server and scanner logs. I have a windows dump of the scanner process if anyone's interested-

I also just tried the aug 4 nightly build and I got the same results, - pre-caching artwork hang. I aborted it. Here is the end of the scanner log. I'm once again going back to 7.5.6 as I need my music. :)

I'll edit this post with results. The beginnings were ugly since I had to manually edit server.prefs to get the SBS to scan the shared folder.

Ok, here's the fail: see the first attachment

I still had to kill scanner.exe via task manager.

Next I'll try the daily in a VM.

Are all problems Windows and perhaps specifically Vista OS related? Things seem to run OK in Linux land, the usual quirk or two excepted here and there...

Ubuntu 11.04 here. 7.6.* doesn't work (OK with a small subset of FLACs, won't scan my full library) and I lack the time and energy to fight with it, so I'm happily using 7.5.5

Thanks,

I'm sure there are a few major things and then stuff will smooth out. This has been my experience with complicated systems upgrades.

Of course, lack of good resources might prolong the agony.

It's probably a good idea that you or pski registers a bug report for this and attach one of the files that seems to cause the problem to the bug report.

Add a link to the bug report in this thread so we know which one belongs to this problem.

I've downgraded to 7.5 and my Squeezebox and Squeeze Radio are now working ok.

If anyone knows how to stop the Squeeze Radio from frequently prompting to upgrade to the latest firmware then please let me know (as I'm thinking that upgrading will stop it working again).

I have to say that I'm really surprised at the apparent lack of engagement by Logitech on these forums about this issue, but perhaps I'm looking in the wrong place? I should add that I'm otherwise very happy with the Squeeze range of products, and this is clearly a rare exceptional problem.

You need to make sure it's connected to a local Squeezebox Server on a computer. If you use it with Logitech's central mysqueezebox.com server, you are going to get the upgrade notifications, there is currently no way to avoid that. I think the Radio might automatically switch to mysqueezebox.com if you turn of the computer, but I'm not completely sure.

This is the community forum with no official Logitech representation, the official Logitech support forum can be found here: http://forums.logitech.com.

Some of the Logitech developers post in this community forum from time to time, but that's just because they like our feedback and like to help users even though it's not their official responsibility.

If you didn't get 7.6 to work it might be a good idea to read the following page to see if your issues are known and how you can provide more information to help Logitech solve the problem:

What exact problem are you talking about? I only saw a posting of you
saying "everything's broken". Many of the biggest issues in 7.6.0 have
been fixed in the 7.6.1 nightly builds. Did you try them?

Hello Michael,

I'm using 7.6.1 (32992-i386-readynas.bin) with a Netgear NAS Ultra 2. Unfortunately, the squeezebox can't scan properly my iTunes playlists (iTunes 10.4). Some playlist are complete, some are incomplete and some don't even appear. I downloaded 7.6.1 (32992) for Mac OSX, just to make sure it was not a NAS problem. I encountered the same problem. I had no problem with 7.5.6. Thank you so much to consider this request.

Michael,

I suppose I was expecting some sort of formal post saying something along the lines of:
1) 7.6 appears to have caused a lot of problems (which is not mentioned in the 7.6 release post);
2) it is being investigated as a matter of priority, and;
3) advising customers of any subsequent releases that fix it.

As for my own problems, 7.6 seemed to break various different parts of my system. It seemed clear that something had gone wrong - these things happen - and that it simply needed fixing rather than scrutinising in detail on my part. In view of that I would expect prompt and visible remediation. I arguably shouldn't have to hunt around for nightly builds. However, it's helpful that you mention that fact (thank you) so I shall experiment.

Just to reiterate, and as I say above, I like the Squeeze ecosystem, and so wouldn't like this to be interpreted negatively. Also, the community and its support network is a great strength.

Hm. So if I browse to www.apple.com, do I see a notice that OSX Lion will break some of my business critical applications, my remote access to my company's intranet and the WiFi on an old MacBook Pro and that people please should wait for OSX 10.7.1 which doesn't exist yet or until my company's supplier updates their remote access product and they implement it and until updates for my business critical apps are out? No, strange, I had to find out about all of this myself... (and luckily did in time)

C'mon, all software can have issues when you update. What you do then is contact support and ask for solutions and from what I see in the Logitech forum (you are aware that this is not the Logitech forum?) the support staff has been quite reactive and Michael and Andy have done an incredibly good job in fixing most of the major issues within a few days.
So the official channel will actually be able to fix your problems. That's what I would expect and that's what's there.

Pski, - let us know if you can do this. Otherwise I will have to do it over the weekend as I will be tied up all day today.

You have to register and create a log-in to initiate a bug, correct?

I posted my issue on the Logitech Support Forums and got this response:

"A bug has been made: http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=17371 "

Not sure if this pertains to a pre-caching hang as it looks like the bug was created before my post and my specific issue. (?)

Thanks!

Did you get any of the support id's listed in that bug ?
If you did, I suppose it would be enough to just attach the file to that bug report and describe which support id it belongs to.

If you didn't get a support id or yours isn't listed, I'd just register a new bug.

Make sure to register one if there is something you are missing. Please note that many problems show up both on Touch, Radio and Controller and in this case we don't need a bug specific for the Controller.

If you don't know how to register a bug and don't feel confident doing it after reading the following page, just register a support case at http://www.logitech.com/support and the support staff will help you register it

As with others, I lost most of my artwork with the 7.6 update.

I'm pleased to report that the beta-update 7.6.1-32969 which I downloaded a couple of days ago and installed (following a complete uninstall) appears to have solved that particular issue.

The full-scan took more than 92 mins (31,056 tracks) and I still have issues re: genres but I thank those involved in achieving this successful update.

Can you see in the scanner.log which artwork file it stalls on ?

As mentioned previously in the thread, if it stalls on a specific file, make sure to register a bug report and attach that file to the bug.

You can enable more logging by going to SBS Settings/Advanced/Logging and changing one or several of the following log points to "debug":
- scan

- scan.import
- scan.scanner

Even with the "debug" set, the artwork file seems not to be the issue: scanner.exe just takes off, stops reading the library, and must be cancelled from the Windows Task Manager. "Abort scan" returns to the settings/advanced/information screen with "done" but the time for pre-caching continues to increment and there is nothing in the webui database at all. Again, the scanner.exe has to be killed from the task manager.
