A bit off topic but I'm wondering if anyone has seen this behavior?

I've currently got all my music stored on a raid drive attached to a
linux box. The drive is shared out via samba & my G4 auto-mounts the
drive on boot. My iTunes folder on the G4 is actually a symlink that
points to the raid drive. All is working fine, except I noticed that
any time I manipulate a file in iTunes (be it change the id3 tag,
import new music, whatever), I get these temp files that all start with
.._

IE:
./U2/Singles/._U2 - Vertigo.mp3

These are much smaller in size than the actual file, but they do take
up space if I don't watch them:

Temp file:
# du -h "/mp3/U2/Singles/._U2 - Vertigo.mp3"
4.0k /mp3/U2/Singles/._U2 - Vertigo.mp3

Actual MP3"
# du -h "/mp3/U2/Singles/U2 - Vertigo.mp3"
5.8M /mp3/U2/Singles/U2 - Vertigo.mp3

Along with this, there are also a series of folders being created in
the iTunes folder itself called "Temp File xx". I hadn't paid attention
for some time & I had over 1gb of space being used by these 30mb files.
I think they are temp copies of my "iTunes Music Library.xml" file
since it is about 30mb in size.

Before I start writing a script to purge these files & folders, I
thought I'd check here to see if anyone knows how to prevent iTunes
from creating them or if you've even seen this behavior before.

Thanks,

-Healy

Well, I can't help solve the problem, but I think that's OS X's Samba
behavior, rather than an iTunes thing.

I've successfully deleted them without apparent ill effect, though they
do get recreated; I don't know if or how one can configure things to
prevent their creation.

I've never seen your "Temp File xx" folders, so I can't help you there;
you might try Apple's support forums.

Thanks for the info. I have posted to Apples forums but not having
much luck. I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one having this issue
though. I've ended up putting this in my crontab:

cd /raid0/ ; find . -name '._*' -exec rm {} \; | /usr/bin/Mail -s
"`/bin/hostname -f` temp files removed" root
