SlimServer 5.3.0 linux loses connection to hardware

I have had much the same symptoms and they magically go away when I
disable the firewall software running on the Windows box (Symantec
firewall on Win XP Pro). I reconfigured things to secure the internal
network at the router and turned off the firewall.
    Squeezebox/Slimserver now work fine.

So if you can, try disabling your firewall, if you have one. If you
don't, then I'm off the mark here.
