Thx kdf.

Understand what you are saying about the DB, but I have been pretty
carefully in terms of adding & removing tracks, & re-scanning. Just to make
sure, I tried the following today:

- Created empty music folder & pointed slim there. Re-scanned and got
confirmation of 0 tracks by 0 artists.

- I put the offending tracks (unmodified from download) in the folder &
re-scanned. Got confirmation of 2 tracks by 2 artists. One track played, the
other did not.

- Cleared the folder of the tracks and re-scanned. Got 0 tracks by 0
artists. Modified the tags (only slightly) on another machine, not the slim
machine. Did not rename them, and copied them into the slim folder on the
server. Re-scanned, 2 tracks by 2 artists. Same result, one track played the
other did not.

- Cleared the slim folder again and re-scanned. 0 tracks by 0 artists.
Renamed the files on another machine. Copied both into the folder.
Re-scanned, 2 tracks by 2 artists. This time neither track played.

Both tracks play fine in itunes & nero, whatever I do to them. I guess you
can never be 100% unless you encode the tracks yourself, but they are not
supposed to be DRM protected. And I have several other tracks from the same
source that all play without a hitch.

This one has me totally confused right now. Going to experiment with the
files some more to see what else I can / can not do with them ... might see
if I can transcode them to MP3.

Not sure if it makes a difference, but the tracks are encoded at a high
bitrate (256K).

H.

if you rename, then the file that the server DB is pointing to will no
longer
exist, hence can't play. It wont reindex that file, becuase the server wont
see it as haivng been updated. just, not there anymore.

If you browse music folder to where the renamed file is, that file should
then
be added, but being a different filename/fileURL it will not replace the
existing file in the 'db'.

and the other file...since its a download, I dont suppose you know for sure
if
the file is DRM protected or not?

clearly...the one file that will not ever play has another issue with it.
turning on the d_source debugging and looking at the log will reveal things
like duration reading as zero, file permissions preventing reading, or an
external decoder reporting a corrupt file. There are still other possibilities
that are not reported. Look at d_source first, whether by running from the
command line, or opening http://serverIP:9000/log.txt and playing that bad
file. When you look at the songinfo, do all the values look normal? When you
play the song, does it try to play for a while, or is it simply silent? Does
it skip immediately to the next song, or is there another type of behaviour?
