View Full Version : quadrophonic vinyl - ripping and playing?

Hi folks,
I picked up a vinyl album last weekend - Paul Simon's self titled album -
and discovered that it is Quadrophonic (!!!)

Now, it sounds ok on my record player (yes, I have a record player; love
collecting old records from markets and garage sales!), but I'm wondering:
- How would you rip this as 4 (or 5:1 I guess) channels? Are there places
out there that would do it for you, or is there even such a thing as a
quadrophonic record player still available at a sane pric?
- How would you play it? I have stereo cables connecting my Squeezebox to
my old stereo, but I also have a surround system and could hook up an
optical connection - can the Squeezebox play surround-sound audio formats?
(I have a squeezebox 3 - as well as an old slimp3 in a box somewhere)

This is mostly just for academic amusement - I'm not really desperate to
hear the glory of Paul Simon in full surround; but I'm interested if it's
possible, or if quadrophonic is a complete dinosaur technology.

Most quadraphonic and surround sound recordings use just two channels;
the decoding into multiple channels is done by the audio hardware you
play them through.

Unless the LP is CD-4 or Quadradisc, which used a high-frequency carrier
wave to drive a special decoder, rip the quadrophonic LP just like any
stereo record, and see how it sounds with whatever surround sound
options you have on your audio system.

Lots of info on using a PC for decoding quad into DTS or DVD-A on this site. Scroll down to "Surround Sound Tech Talk".

Thanks - it looks like, if I'm keen, I might be actually able to rip this
record!
.... not sure I'm as keen as some of the folks on those forums, mind. But I
might give it a try.
