View Full Version : Squeezebox Classic/IR Out/Multi-zone Audio Question

I am retrofitting an existing multi-zone audio system. I want to get rid of
the keypads and each room and go to a Squeezebox based system. It's a 6
zone system and my current idea is to: Use 6 Squeezebox Classics employing
the IR out feature (IR Blaster Plugin). This would allow per zone control
of the Multizone Audio Controller (Amp's) volume, on/off, etc. via the
Squeezebox Controller or one of the iPad/iTouch apps. EVERYTHING could be
controlled via a WiFi controller - no need for keypads or other remote to
control the multizone audio controller.

This seems like a good solution, except: What if the Classics go away and
are not longer available? They do break. I'd prefer to use a Squeezebox
Receiver, but it does not have the IR out feature. Apparently the Touch does
not have it either.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how I might achieve the same objective
without being dependent on the Classic? Again the objective is to have the
Amp/Reviver and Squeezebox Server controlled on a per zone basis exclusively
from the Wi-Fi controller or iPad App.

Any suggestions would be really appreciated. Thanks.

You can use 3 different apps on iPad for cotrolling squeezeboxes.

I use SqueezePad and iPeng ( there is the free oficial app wich i have not tried ).

if can accept to use another app and product for amp controll etc I would recomend iRule app combined with iTach products i have replaced all remote controlls for my complete home theater with this app.
ITach makes small networked "things" that have ir rs232 or relay outputs cool

For controlling volume I have to switch app on my iPad, but thats because i prefer the iPad app for controlling my Touch, I have emulated the squeezebox ir remote in iRule , but the Touchs display is not really visible on distance so feedback is poor.

For my kitchen I use powered fostex speakers and an SB3 there i think the squeezebox own volume controll good enough and there is no amp to controll , so iPad apps alone is perfect here.

My solution may not satify your spec completely, but I wanted to share what could be done with an iPad

Thanks for that. I looked at the iRule and the Global Cache....looks very
interesting. Do you use the iRule Builder? I wonder if you can get iRule
to at least launch iPeng?

another quesiton - was it easy to get the iTach to talk to iRule? Do you
use iRule for your TV/Home theatre?

thanks!

yes TV/ HT is controled by iRule .

Getting iRule to find the iTach units was simple, configuring the iTach units is also simple each one has a webpage. And there is some help apps for windows to configure them too.

iRule builder is google app so you log in with your browser firefox works for me.
Your iPad is then synced to that account so downloading your remotes to the pad is simple.

This is the work intensive part it's very flexible but that means that you basically biuld every remote you want yourself some preexisting picture elements and backgrounds and buttons exist but I did a lot of my own backgrounds and buttons . You can design both landscape and portrait pages for the same " remote " and also separate phone and pad versions, macros are easy to do. The app has a lot of remote codes , in case you have a device not covered by default there is an ir learner unit you can buy.

I've have not figured a way to make iRule launch other apps ?

The iTach units have an api , so if you are a programmer it would be easy to interface them to any
program.

If you own Denon equipment there is actually a Denon serial plugin for squeezebox server btw

I'd like to control my two SB's with iRule in combination with iPeng. I was wondering if anyone had an iRule SB setup that they would be willing to share or contribute to the iRule Builder site?

Thank you!
