Thanks, Simon, but no I meant that I did have WinAmp connected & playing.
I just tried again -- Open SlimServer, open Winamp enter my URL ....:9000/stream.mp3,
Winamp starts playing visibly & audibly, & Slim stops saying "Can't find Player"...
but still no Volume Control anywhere in SlimServer.
I also tried different skins, refresh & rescan, but the only way I've been able to see a vol.control
on Slim is to also open SoftSqueeze, whereupon it's visible at the upper-right as you said.
(I do not have Squeezebox, but only Winamp for now, & haven't had any luck with SoftSqueeze
except for it causing the vol.control to show.)

Perhaps there's no Volume control in Slim alone...?

there is NO volume control when using winamp, becuase volume control does not
apply. Winamp has its own volume control, and it does not obey any volume
commands from teh slimserver, which is why they are designed not to appear.

you have to connect with slimserver, slimp3 or squeezebox for volume control.
