Call off the dogs.  Turns out my vpn client was sitting on several ports - including 9000.  Turned it off and it seems to work now.  Thanks all.

Just an oddity, doesn't cause any problems.

Running Mac OS 10.3 (currently 10.3.5, but the behaviour has existed
on earlier versions).

On starting the computer, or restarting, the message "Demarrage du
SlimServer" shows up briefly. I would have expected any message to be
in English.
