View Full Version : SlimServer 5.3.0 crashes when using SoftSqueeze

My SlimServer 5.3.0 service crashes with the error below as soon as I try to use SoftSqueeze. Startup of the application is fine, but the first attempt to access any of my playlists leads to the following error:

"The description for Event ID ( 0 ) in Source ( Application ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. The following information is part of the event: Illegal division by zero at /PerlApp/Slim/Player/SqueezeboxG.pm line 522.
.."

The last thing I tried prior to things going haywire was to set the scroll rate and scroll pause for the SoftSqueeze device to 0, which may or may not be related to the crash. In any case, its 100% reproducible.

Server details:
3.0 GHz Pentium 4, 1 GB RAM, Windows 2000 SP4

setting scrollrate = 0 would be the problem.
zero shoudl be used to indicate no scrolling, but it hasn't been implemented for
graphics modes.

Look for a fix in the upcoming 5.3.1 in a day or two.

oh yeah, to fix the problem you have now...look for slimserver.pref, most likely
in c:\program files\slimserver\server

edit any line that says "scrollrate = 0"
and change that zero to anything but zero, or even delete the whole line.

I'm still encountering problems where I lose connection to the
slimserver box. I'm running the server on a linux box. I haven't
been using it much but I'll walk down to the room where the hardware
is located and the display will be off, hit power and it says its lost
connection. Pulling the power on the box and resetting it reconnects
it.

Michael,

Would it be possible for you to do a packet trace when you are in this
situation? We'd like to see the traffic when the player is trying to
reconnect and fails.

Also, please confirm that this is with version 5.3.0...

I can try and get whatever data you all need. The biggest problem
though is I never see it when it actually happens. This morning when
I left the house it was connected and fine. Since I don't use it
everyday or even every week it can go awhile before I notice it.

I'll double check the version later tonight, but I did upgrade when
the announcement was posted.

What can I do to do a packet trace?

It is currently in this state. Whats even wierder is that the web
interface doesn't notice this, but the display is blank on the
hardware. If I hit the power button then it says its lost connection.
I noticed it this morning because I queued up some tracks via the web
interface in another room and hit play but didn't hear anything
playing down stairs so I went to check and it was lost.

What would you like me to run on my linux box to get you information.
I'll leave it in its current state until I hear back.

SlimServer version under server status says:

" SlimServer Version: 5.3.0"
"Player Firmware Version: 38"
from player settings.

Does the hardware respond to pings? What about a traceroute? Reason
I'm asking because its as if it is no long even on my network. It
just doesn't exist anymore. My linksys router says that it no longer
exists in the dhcp table and nothing is there.

Ditto Here.
I have the exact same issue. I come home from work, screen is blank.
Slimserver still sees the box and pretends to react to commands from the web
interface, but pressing a button on the remote give me the "lost contact
with slimerver..." Anything I should try?
--tim

PS: can you provide roll back instructions to 5.2-ish? Thx

I was running a linksys hardware firewall on my network and was
experiencing other connection problems (day of defeat dropped
connections, slow speeds at times, it would drop my windows box from
its dhcp table but my pc would still keep connection), so I thought
I'd try another brand. Best Buy has a netgear 4 port firewall router
for 19 bucks after rebates so I thought why not. I installed it on
sunday and the squeezebox hasn't dropped its connection yet.

I think you are on to something. Shortly after my (XP) SP2 upgrade, one of
my other computers began having DHCP issues. I upgraded the firmware on my
Stinksys BEFW11S4 (ver 4) router and reset my network stack and the problem
went away for a while. I still suffer from long boots and the ipconfig /
renew command takes 60 seconds to complete. I think the same issue is
plaguing the Squeezbox. I'll upgrade to either a Belkin or Netgear this
weekend. Thanks for the tip!

Have either of you tried pressing and *holding* the power button?

I find that if my computer has been asleep for a long time then the
Squeezebox reports "lost contact" if I press a button. But holding
down the power button gives the message "restarting..." and then just
waiting for a time (not attempting to set up again, though that is
what the next message suggests) puts the Squeezeboc through its
provedure to recheck the connection and finishes up by connecting.

This is pretty much my standard procedure at present, as waking my
machine evidently does not fully wake my network.

Nope, my network never sleeps. My linux box is on full time as well
as my windows machine. Slimserver runs on the linux box and neither
have their connections sleep after a certain time.

Thanks for the reply. The -only- way that I can get the Squeezebox to
work -is- to hold the power button and force a restart, but this should not
be a daily occurrence. I've never had to do that as often before the 5.3.1
upgrade. I do think it is my network though; The DHCP glitch and other
strange things have prompted me to RMA the router. I'll keep you posted.

My setup is a Mac G4 running OS 10.3.5 (and earlier versions of
10.3.x) with two Airport Extreme base stations (two because one did
not seem to have quite the range I needed). And I usually get this
issue if my computer has been asleep for a long time (overnight, for
instance). I'm convinced that for some reason the wireless network
does not wake when the computer wakes, but needs some action on the
network, for instance restarting the Squeezebox. I'm sure it isn't a
Squeeebox issue.

The current firmware deals with this elegantly, just going
automatically through the restart feature. With earlier firmware I
often had to unlpug the Squeezebox power supply and replug to get it
working.

Ditto. I've always had this - though I do turn off my PC every night. I have
to do a SB reboot before it will reconnect..

Nope,
New Linksys router gives me the same "lost contact" problem. I think its
related to 5.3, can anyone post instructions for downgrading firmware to use
5.2 server?
