View Full Version : Aargh! Too loud! Too loud!

So, I've got a Squeezebox stashed away in my bedroom cupboard, with cables
going from an amp, down through the floorboards to flush-mounted speakers in
the sitting room ceiling. Communication with the server is through WiFi, and
control is done via the HTTP interface on a WiFi-capable PDA thingy.

It all works fine - all you can see in the sitting room is the speakers and
a neat little control panel on the PDA.

Trouble is, the amplifier is sized to drive the speakers, and so produces
lots of noise when it's told to; that in turn means that the HTTP volume
control doesn't go down far enough for quiet background music: level 1 is
off, and level 2 is a little too loud. I know that the squeezebox can do
what I want, because I can turn it down a little using the official remote
control, which commands smaller steps in volume than the HTTP interface.

- What is the basic granularity of the volume control? 0 to 100? 0 to 255?

- Would it be possible to program the volume settings through a lookup
table, so the increase in volume is logarithmic rather than linear?

- Or perhaps one could define the high and low volume limits? I can imagine
three HTML buttons that set the volume range: "Background" would perhaps be
0% to 20%, with "Midlevel" and "Smokin'" set to appropriately different
points.

Hope that makes sense
Martin

Martin,

What version of firmware & slimserver are you running? There were some (fairly) recent
changes that should address this very issue. Check the list archives.
