Robin, you are *so* right; absolutely spot on! The boundary between lists
*is* too blurred! The problems that so many people are so obviously having
could be almost eliminated by having a properly debugged version that
everyone can rely upon and fall back to if necessary whilst the "clever
ones" can go ahead and develop and add features through beta releases and
nightlies. Arguably, some may say that software development is already dealt
with in this way, but I don't believe that is strictly true. Version 5.2 as
publicly released was not bug free!. It can't be denied - just look through
these lists! People had all sorts of problems which they turned to nightlies
to resolve, only to find that further problems were introduced. OK, so make
the beta development by application or invite only, but before that happens
let us have a version that is truly de-bugged first!

Don't let 5.3 loose until you know it's 100% sorted.... Please!

Regards
Roger, Newbury, UK

I'd like to make a suggestion about the mailing lists in relation to the
software versions.

You may remember I was (am) very strongly in favour of having more clearly
defined branches for the slimserver software. I think there should be:

1. stable or release version, wich is updated to fix bugs and introduce new
features after they have been thoroughly tested, e.g. support for the
graphic display.

2. development or beta version, which is where most bugs are fixed and
tested and where new features are first introduced and tested.

Plus of course:

3. CVS (or nightly builds), for those who like to be bleeding edge!

I think the mailing lists should reflect this, i.e. there should be two or
three
lists:

1. slim-users (AT) lists (DOT) slimdevices.com
For non-technical users of Squeezebox and slimp3 products.
Questions and issues related to RELEASE versions of software, i.e. 5.2.1 and
the upcoming 5.3 version.

2. slim-devel (AT) lists (DOT) slimdevices.com
For more technical users, particular those using beta and CVS versions of
software.

3. developers (AT) lists (DOT) slimdevices.com
For those actually coding slimserver.

I think these changes would go a long way towards creating a better image
for slim devices.

Thoughts?

R.

can we add:
gmail-invites (AT) lists (DOT) slimdevices.com too? :)
