You shouldn't need a gateway setting. The gateway is the address where
all non-locally-addressed packets are sent for further disposition. The
netmask determines what's local.

Example: you have an IP address of 192.168.1.100 and a netmask of
255.255.255.0. In this case, every host that begins with 192.168.1 is
local.

As long as both your laptop and Squeezebox share the first 3 numbers of
an IP, you should be able to talk.
