View Full Version : External display for Transporter, Touch?

Is it possible to use an external display with something like the Transporter or the Touch? Ultimately, what I'd like is something roughly the size of an iPad or maybe a bit larger that is nice looking that could sit on my entertainment center and display album art while playing music.

I realize that I could buy an iPad and use it as a remote but I'm really looking for something that would sit with my audio system that others would not be tempted to pick up and use for other purposes.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Joe

Maybe smaller than you'd wish, but the Touch's screen can be set to display just album art.

Yes, thanks, but definitely smaller than I'd like. I want something that will look good and be readable from across the room.

I use a 7" mimo USB monitor/touchscreen connecte to my acer running a slightly modified Squeezeplay to act as a display and controller for my transporter.

Looks great.

The NowPlaying display looks very good. The only think I donít like is that fact that you need a computer running. I would be great if a digital photo frame could be used for such a purpose. Anyone tried that?

Actually you just need a web browser - any web browser - to display the NP screen. Could be in a photo-frame..

Yes, but I havenít seen any frame yet who has built in web browsing capabilities.
I donít know if that exist. Maybe there are some frames that would support using FTP but that would require a complete different plugin on SBS. I know there are picture frames that support email but in this case we would again need a different plugin on the SBS side.
It can be done with an iPad of course but that is an expensive solution. I would like a solution with a picture frame because these are way less expensive and you could easily have multiple frames in different rooms.

A digital picture frame is exactly what I had in mind although I like the Mimo touch screen idea as well. I have no idea if it's possible to get a digital pitcure frame that is capable of displaying the html for the "NowPlaying" app.

Many WiFi picture frames state they are web enabled but it most cases it means they can access sources such as Flicker, Facebook and others. They canít really just show a web page like a web browser does. There is maybe one who could do it: Samsung SPF-85V. According to the specs it has a ďmini webpageĒ viewer for easy Internet access.

There is maybe another possible candidate: the iGala http://www.igala.com/
I donít think the iGala supports Internet browsing yet but these people seem to be very open to suggestions. There have been other people asking for it. And they also have released an SDK so maybe some developers could even created a custom application on the iGala.

If your pc is close to the player the. Mimo screen is really vey nice - but I don't think can be connected wirelessly. The touchscreen works well and the screensavwr clocksnlook good with mods.

You mentioned in your previous post that you use a 'modified' version of Squeezeplay. Is it able to display full screen? I know the standard version can't.

Also, do you know if the USB touch screen can be connected to a computer that already has a monitor? I imagine it could and would function like any other 'peripheral' (e.g. a mouse).

Thanks,
Joe

Yes it's a simple mod to use full screen and the screensavers I am traveling at present but will share the files and some pictures if that would be of help over the weekend.

Do what I did, Get hold of a O2 Joggler with the squeezeplay mod works just like a touch. Has a bigger screen and wifi. Worth a look.

I have now moved on to using vortexbox, so currently not running momento frame to display album art but it was an interesting project, as an aside also hooked up my laptop to the head phone output of my amp and using some music ID software was able to identify any music, cd, vinyl, squeezebox and display it too. There are some really cheap webrowser tablets out there that do wifi but are pretty poor compared to ipad so hence much cheaper ( Ä70-120) for 7 inch and above that would access the squeezebox HTML file. I know hmv were selling some.

My big screen for Touch - various Samsung TV models firmware could be modified. Info - http://samygo.sourceforge.net/.
1. Install NetSurf browser
2. Point URL to http://'squeezeboxserver ip':9000/handheld/status.html

I also made some changes to NetSurf options file and created custom skin (attached pictures

Laimjar, that looks really great! Could you please explain in more detail how you did this?

Is the screen functional in any way - e.g., does the volume bar work, or is it just for display?

Thanks,
