RAKK DAC is also a DAC that you can assemble yourself. I have an audiophile friend who's been hyping it for a while. I may end up buying one for myself. RAKK dac Mk III (http://www.kandkaudio.com/digitalaudio.html)

It wont be long before it wont make much sense to buy off the shelf dacs. A simple board with power supply will make the most sense.

I would not recommend getting this DAC. The probability that it will sound better than a Touch on its own is pretty low. There is nothing in this design that is particularly better than what is in the Touch.

If you really want to try something DIY build the power supply I've posted here. Its easy to build and can yield significant improvements in some systems.

Also try Soundcheck's tweaks, I've heard significant improvements with thses. (its just software, you can always go back if you don't like it)

If you are really adventuresome you can take the Touch apart and bypass the output caps.

A combination of these will give you quite a bit better sound than you can get from that DAC.

Hi John,

Have you heard this DAC ? No.

So how do you can write, that SBT with tweaks will sound better than this DAC ? This is all theoretical speculation.

You are right, I have not heard this particular one, but I have built over thirty DACs with many different DAC chips, IV and output stage topologies. I have also heard many DACs that I have not built myself with even wider set of components and topologies. From all this I have a fairly good set of correlations as to what things are important and what works well together.

From what I can see on the net and read from people that have worked with this DAC I see nothing that would indicate it would sound better than a Touch with the PS I mentioned, configured properly, especially if you bypass the output caps.

Note I said there is a low probability it will sound better than the properly setup Touch. It might still be an incredibly great sounding DAC that puts a well setup Touch to shame, but I really doubt it.
