I have a P3 800mhz linux machine with 256mb ram and 2.5tb disk space.
I'm
running linux rh9, and the box does dns, squid, slimserver, and a slave

backend for mythtv. It sits in a corner and I only log in to the box
to
upgrade the apps - it's not used as a desktop at all. I've got about
30k
songs (well, 60k if you count mp3 and flac) with some wav files.

Playing mp3s, I have no problems, whether just listening or browsing
around. When listening to flac or WAV, my slimp3 and sbg (wired) I
get a dropout about once a song while just listening, and lots of
dropouts when browsing or searching the music. I figure once I
get a nicer server, all the dropouts will go away. Or just add lots
more ram.

Oh, and when I'm recording a TV show, it's almost impossible to
listen to flac, but mp3is still fine.

I'm running one with 512mb ram, P3 550 with Fedora Core 2. Have had no
issues with dropouts or response issues with the browser. It does take
awhile (about 45 minutes) to initially scan the library when I refresh
the cache. There's about 10,000 mp3's on it. I did have occasional
issues with 256mb ram but they went away with 512mb.
