I am starting to get suspicious that this was precipitated by faulty
motherboard or memory, as the disk itself appears to be working fine.

I am going to replace the motherboard, cpu and RAM with a new setup and I
will look into disk mirroring if it's feasible.

Thanks.

While you're there buy two, and look into mirroring when you install them.
It's easy and you'll not regret it.

What's the guarantee on the drives? I don't buy drives with less than three
years warranty.
