View Full Version : iPod + iPeng, which iPod?

Hi there

Which ipod touch for controlling the players?

I don't need games and others, so I thought about 8 GB version.
But 32 and 64 have better performance and I wonder if it makes any
difference when using iPeng?

I like if everything works immediately without delays.

Cheers

The 3G models (32+64GB) FEEL faster. Scrolling is much smoother handling
often feels snappier.
Yet the only MEASURABLE difference is in the startup time (3s vs.
5-6s). For most other operations the reaction time is solely dependent
on server response time.

Too bad for me, I think I'll not be able to avoid the games if I buy
32GB version :)

Another quick one - I use "Browes -> music folder" 100% of the time. Is
iPeng supporting it well?

Yes but it's got a few gotchas:
1. Don't use playlists in folders with tracks
2. Don't use nested folders (with tracks).
3. even though you browse by folder you should still run regular scans
before browsing the folder
4. Some releases of Squeezebox Server are a bit buggy WRT folders.

iPeng will always show all your tracks but it will handle folders like
albums if you respect #1 and #2, that is, you can e.g. play the whole
folder from track x by tapping track x and things like that. This does
not work with nesting, that is, if the folder we talk about contains
subfolders or playlists.

#3: There's a bug in SBS 7.4 and 7.5 (not in 7.6 beta) that generates
faulty artwork for tracks and albums if you scan a folder by browsing
it instead of doing a regular rescan. The biggest issue is that these
faulty artworks get cached so you have to do a clear and rescan to get
rid of them.

#4: Some versions (don't know which ones) of the server count other,
not shown files in the folders (e.g. PDFs) so it can happen that if you
tap track x the folder will play from track y instead.

Apart from that: Context menu information (e.g. Artist info or Album
info) is not available from folders so you will not have these
additional options in the folder context menu. They are still available
for the track but a folder for SBS and iPeng is a folder, not an album
or an artists.

Hmm, I got confused.

My library is a lot of files, organized in folders, which are nested.
It happens sometimes there is a folder with tracks and other folders
inside. This is because it's classical music and any tagging doesn't
really work. Will this work then for me?

What I want is browsing the collection and be able to "play" or "add"
on any item - folder or file. Just like in SC.

I don't need cover art that much (although would be nice), and don't
need any album behaviour. I have SC configured in a way it plays a
single track only, if I play/add on a track.

I'm just one step from buying an ipod, I really hope the answer is
"yes" :)

Cheers

You can play any item. You can play a folder, but it will also play all
sub-folders then - just like in SC.
You can not handle it like an album (which is a bit different than in
SC, it's like on the iPhone) if it has subfolders, well, it might work
if you set "play other tracks in album" to "yes" (for the server) if
this works with the server version you use - this is also the same as
SC.
