I don't have a solution, but a simlar thing happened to me and I'm not quite sure why.

Here is the readout of the "Music Scan Details" on the Information Page

Directory Scan (20748 of 20748) Complete 00:26:36
Playlist Scan (9 of 9) Complete 00:00:07
Merge Various Artists (1 of 1528) Complete 00:00:17
Copland Conducts Copland
Music scan terminated unexpectedly (Merge Various Artists)
Total Time: 00:27:00 (Monday, May 24, 2010 / 12:15 AM)

I would attach the scanner log file but it is huge and seems to be too big to post.

Any thoughts / suggestions would be appreciated.

I had a series of similar problems running SBS 5.0/5.1 on WinXP. It would crash randomly during scanning, at different stages of the process.

As other threads have mentioned, large emebedded artwork files seemed to be the problem. So I used a freeware program to resize all non embedded artwork files to 300x300 pixels; and in MP3 tag, deleted all embedded artwork. I guess this is fine as long as you have all the unembedded artwork files.

This most often is a problem with antivirus software. (and the log would be very helpful in pinning this down)

Disable or uninstall your antivirus and try to scan again. If it scans successfully you know what your problem is. I now Microsoft Security Essentials has been a problem for a number of people.

With some antivirus programs exceptions can be put in to make the antivirus software play well the the server software. I would encourage you to search the forums on this issue. There has been a lot of discussion about it.

The OP of this tread has a Ready NAS so different issue .

Crashed scan on win is pretty much always anti-virus or similar, set them to ignore *.MYD and *.MYI files etc .

Latest culprit has been

MSE
comodo
McAffe
....

This will be less of an issue after 7.6 (I hope)

OP's very short scanner log has this for example:

[10-05-06 16:14:34.6720] Slim::Utils::Scanner::scanDirectory (333) Scanning: /Music/δΈ*ζ–‡ζ*Œ/鄧麗君/ι„§ιΊ—ε›ε››εˆδΈ€ηθ—η‰ˆ/Disc2/07 ε—ζ΅·ε§‘ε¨˜.mp3

[10-05-06 16:14:34.7028] Slim::Utils::Scanner::scanDirectory (345) Adding file:///Music/%E4%B8%AD%E6%96%87%E6%AD%8C/%E9%84%A7%E9%BA%97%E5%90%9B/%E9%84%A7%E9%BA%97%E5%90%9B%E5%9B%9B%E5%90%88%E4%B 8%80%E7%8F%8D%E8%97%8F%E7%89%88/Disc2/07%20%E5%8D%97%E6%B5%B7%E5%A7%91%E5%A8%98.mp3 to database.

which sure looks weird to me , but beyond my skills figure out codepage issue ? locale of NAS ? The origin of the files and folders ? smb snafu ?
What do they look like seen from a shell prompt like ssh ?

I tried brucegrr's suggestion and disabled MSE. The scan worked fine with MSE disabled.

Thanks for the tip.

I don't think that that is the problem!
I'm running a Synology DS508, never had issues but this started appearing since 7.4.1
I run the scan for no more then a few minutes and I'm getting...

Directory Scan (144 of 38529) Complete 00:03:17
/volume1/music/my-music/Albums (Various Artists)/Hitzone/Hitzone 46 (2008) - Pop/205-leona_lewis-better_in_time.mp3
Music scan terminated unexpectedly (Directory Scan)
Total Time: 00:03:17 (Mon, 31. May 2010 / 19:15:10)

to get the log file (complete) have a look here: http://neo-box.dyndns.org/scanner.log
If you can explain me why this is failing I would be SOOOOOO greatful.
According to me: a huge bug, so hopefully somebody will bring a fix out soon!

Any help is appreciated!!!!
