I have my slimbox wired to my computer, with the
digital coax hooked up to to my denon receiver. I've
tried ever format available to me AAC, apple
losseless, flac, AIF, and lame encoded MP3. When I
compare the sound coming from my cd player (hooked up
to the optical), The cd player sounds much brighter,
just plain old better that the slimbox. Has any one
else noticed this? Are there adjustments I can make
to the slimbox to improve this? - Tobias

This should probably be in the FAQ by now....

Things to check:

1) Make sure the bit rate limit for you player
is set to "no limit", otherwise the server will
re-code to MP3 to reduce network bandwidth
(wireless only).

2) Make sure the Squeezebox volume is set to the
maximum volume if you have the digital volume
controls enabled.

3) Make sure you're using a recent 5.3 or newer)
version of slimserver - some earlier versions
had bugs which affected the digital outs.

4) Make sure you're ripping using software set to
paranoid mode to ensure it's not letting any
read errors through. Stick to Flac until you've
got the quality where you want it from the
hardware, then you can reduce the compression
quality later if you need to save disc space.

5) Try using the optical input on your receiver
- then you know you're comparing like with
like to the CD player.

6) Make sure the Squeezebox power is plugged into a
lightly loaded mains socket.

7) Compare the audio using blind testing to make sure
the differences you're hearing are genuine.

It can be made to sound as good as a high-end CD transport,
so persist with it.
