View Full Version : can slimserver detect client IP address automatically?

Hello, I haven't been using slimserver that long, but it's a really
sweet piece of software. Right now I am just using slimserver to stream my
music collection from a server I have co-located.

One thing I've been looking for is a plugin or some code that can detect a
client's IP address so when a client connects to the server with their media
player and web browser the slimserver detects the IP or player-setting. I'd
think this would be pretty common since most people don't know their IP address
offhand I think it can be cumbersome to go through the steps to find it.

Ideally if I could use a _hostname_ (like athome.homedns.org or
atwork.homedns.org) for the IP variable then I wouldn't lose my playlists and
player settings when my dynamic IP changes! that would be awesome, but I
figure just detecting the IP would be a start.

thanks for any advice!

Milan,

This should work already. The clients identify themselves to the server
using their MAC address as a unique ID. So even though the IP is what
shows up initially in the pop-up list in the web interface, they're
actually being tracked internally by a unique number.

This means settings move along with the device, even if it gets a
different IP from DHCP or if it moves to another network. It also means
that if you assign a name to the player in player settings, it will
keep that name in the pop-up list regardless of where it goes.

Hi Sean, I think it works for slim devices, but I'm just using your
average browser and media player. Hence the lack of detection of client/mac
address. :^\

Is there a place (webpage/ML) where I can beg for this feature?

I don't own a slimdevice and feel a bit guilty for just using the great free
software. but i might purchase one in the future ... also I'd consider
donating to developers to implement this feature i'm describing!

thanks for your reply,
