If I want to play 24-bit FLAC files, do I have to buy a Transporter, or will my Squeezebox Classic (original model) work. All I seem to get is "noise".

When it comes to hardware both the Transporter and the Touch should do 24/96.
But was my understanding that for other models Squeezecenter would convert on the fly.... I guess that it is time to go and try myself.

Recent versions of SBS (or SqueezeCenter) downsample hi-rez flac to 24/48 which can be handled natively by a SB Classic.

For details, search for 'sox' on the link below or go to 7.3.2 Release Highlights.

You need to be running SBS 7.4.2

FWIW, I've never had a problem playing 24-bit FLACs...and I'm running 7.3.3.

I have two FLAC files of Rebeca Pidgeon doing "Spanish Harlem", one is 24/96 the other us 24/88.2. But in both cases they are down sampled to 44.1KHz -- or should I say, the sync light on my DAC indicates 44.1KHz. I would have expected for the 96KHz file for the 48KHz sync light to show activity.

Have I missed a setting somewhere? Current SBS is the 7.4.2 nightly 30-Jan-10. edit: SB2 and a SB3 - the SB3 has a DAC with 32/44.1/48KHz indicators.

Thanks!

My Rebeca Pidgeon "Spanish Harlem", 24/96 file reports as 48K on my HT preamp connected to my SB3 ? It is from "The Raven"

If Spanish Harlemis such a good "test" track, where can I download FLAC versions from?

HD tracks , has 24bti files as downloads.

They don't sell outside US but if you use paypal and not an credit card, they look the other way, and don't fuzz about that.

I am running SBS 7.4.2 and have no problems listening to 24/96 FLAC files, but my TacT 2.2 sync light also reflects only 44.1 kHz. BTW, My current audio system is comprised of the following components: PC + Slimserver connected to Soundbox 3 via ethernet; SB3 digital out directly into digital preamp (Tact 2.2); digital out from preamp to digital in of Boz digital amps. There are essentially no analogue components in the path from the audio files stored on hard drive to the speakers which themselves have configurable digital crossovers. I'm using the SB3 purely as a lightweight client, i.e., using it and its remote to select digital audio files from my PC for playback on my Hi-Fi system.

I have recently started purchasing 24 bit/96 kHz high resolution FLAC files from sites such as HDtracks.com. Does the SB3 send these files sampled at 96 kHz to the digital preamp in this format, or does it reduce the sampling frequency to 44.1 kHz? (As mentioned previously, the information on the TacT 2.2 indicates that the incoming sample is only 44.1 kHz and not 96 kHz.)

I know that as far as analogue goes, the Touch supports these high resolution formats in the analogue domain, but I won't be using the analogue output so I don't see any need at present to purchase the Touch.

Your experience and input would be much appreciated.

The SB3 can only handle 48k analogue and digital out. SOX is used in SBS to downsample 96k 24bit to 48k 24bit (edit: well maybe 44.1k 24bit?). The Touch can handle 96k. The interesting bit is why 44.1 k?

Indeed - My TACT would show 48 (which was what it was getting from SOX) when I had my SB3 connected to it playing a 96 file...
The Touch will pass 96 as 96 to the Tact - I am listening to one right now
:-)

I can't imagine why you are getting 44.1 on the TACT display if you are using a 96 file and running 7.4 software. On the PC, you should see a process called SOX that only runs (in Task Manager) when you are playing a > 48 file...

Thanks a stack for your input guys. You have persuaded me to upgrade to the Touch asap (it didn't take much convincing though - the Touch looks so good!)

While your waiting for your Touch you might want to give VortexBox Player a try. It can play up to 192/24 with no problems and no re-sampling. It works with USB DACs as well as S/PDIF.

I'll recheck the 44.1 kHz reading. I also have a Squeezebox Duet - does it support 96 kHz audio files without decreasing the sampling rate?

No, it's the same as SB3. Sorry only Transporter & Touch can support 96k sample rates.

The software looks almost too good to be true! Is there a plugin that supports WAV files? I have a terabyte of WAV files that I would like to have access too as well as FLAC files that I've purchased. If these 192 kHz files can be handled by SB3, surely Logitech could update the firmware to do this natively?

You can play WAV files. VortexBox player dosn't work with SB3 it's just plays the music directly to a USB or S/PDIF DAC attached to your VortexBox. You can also play through a sound card installed in your VortexBox.
