Welcome to the forum.

Which version of Squeezebox Server are you running? 7.4.1 or one of the non-released branches? 7.4.2 or 7.5.0? and in that case what are the buildnumber?

Also could you attach your server and scanner logfiles?!

A few things could cause this - a bit more info would help as suggested above. The scanner.log and server.log files may give you a clue.

Are you using itunes or MusicIP integration or just the basic scanner?

If your scan doesn't "take" (i.e. the scan starts up every time you start up Squeezecenter software) - that may suggest that there is a problem saving your scan cache. Windows 2008 is a server version of the software, right? If you go to the web interface, Settings/Information where is the cache being saved?

The other thing to check (and again the scanner.log should help) is that you don't have any recursive file references - that can really hang up the scanner. Enable the d_scan field in Debugging, open up the log.txt field (at the top of the debugging page) and run a full "Clear everything and rescan". Keep an eye on the scan as it runs through. If you have a recursive link, or a bunch of files which are no longer where you used to put them, or a bunch of playlists which have moved (all three of which can be a cause of the behaviour you are witnessing) - this will show up in the log.

Also, don't run Microsoft Security Essentials. The scan won't complete.

Ah, good point - although I thought that bug was fixed? (Or is that only in 7.5).

"or a bunch of files which are no longer where you used to put them, or a bunch of playlists which have moved (all three of which can be a cause of the behaviour you are witnessing)"

just using the basic scanner

If you want to atached more logs, zip them they shrink drastically and I think the forum sw allows larger zip than txt files ?

No clue to your problems , but as you seems to use network share for the music, disk read is magnitudes slower than if the drive is in the computer.
So you should expect a somewhat slower scan ? but how much slower i have no idea.

What kind of DAS and controller are you using?
150MBps isn't that fast for an array but should be plenty but I guess seek times are more important, and that is often faster on a single spindle.

Good to hear... although lways nicer when one know the reason.

BTW Regarding scanning You can look forward to some good speed improvements in 7.4.2 and 7.5
