View Full Version : Product Life Of Old 2-Line Display

The new display looks great and my immediate emmotional reaction is to
upgrade. However, I must admit that I am having a hard time justifying it.
The thing is, I need 2. That's $180 (or $140 after rebates) which is
mightly close to the price of a brand spankin new Squeezebox. So for just
a wee bit more I get another unit (which I have been wanting real bad)
instead of upgraded displays. Decisions. Decisions.

Well, I do have a few questions. Hoping someone might have some answers
and/or comments...

What impact does the new display have on the server-side process? Given
that it seems to handle "graphics," does it take extra CPU clicks to run it
or is it the same as the old display? The reason I ask is the current
display is mightly S... L.... O..... W...... when the server gets busy
doing other things, like rescanning the library, so I don't want to add
anything that will burden the server further.

How long will the old 2-line display be supported in SlimServer? Thought I
read rumors of two versions of SlimServer, one graphic and one not, or
maybe that was just an inside joke. In any case, at some point in the
(distant) future, it seems reasonable to expect support for the old display
might be dropped in favor of the current product line. Although this would
effectively kill the entire SliMP3 product line so I am not sure how that
would play out with Slim Devices management.

Last month I read some threads about an improved Double-Height font for the
Squeezebox that someone had developed. Is this going to be implemented
officially in SlimServer or is it up to each user to customize? If I keep
the 2-line displays, I will definately want a better Double-Height font
because I run the units in large mode 98.7% of the time.

Hoping someone can offer some insight. Thanks.

I suggest that you get the new Squeezebox and see if you like the
display enough to upgrade the old ones... :)

There's a slight increase in server CPU overhead when generating
graphics/fonts with the new display. It hasn't been optimized yet, so
I expect it to only get better over time.
My gut feeling is that the new graphics display uses about the same
amount of CPU as using the old display in large font mode.

It's still a small overhead compared to scanning, creating long
playlists, etc...

Our plan is to continue support for the old products indefinitely. Of
course, there may be new feature that only work on new hardware, but
the old players should keep on working...

We do plan on adding this patch. KDF is working on adding support for
multiple font choices and the hope is to add these in for the older
players.

Then you DEFINITELY want the new display. It's so much better in terms
of readability, especially when in large mode.
