View Full Version : Squeeze box looses connection to server

As a total newbie to the joy of the Squeezebox, I hope you will forgive me
if this is obvious but I have searched and don't really know what to look
for. I have a Fedora Core 2 slimserver and two squeezeboxes. Both SB
loose connection to the server after about 15-20 seconds of playing, then
connect again for 15-20 seconds, then disconnect, etc. I really don't
know where to start, any pointers?

I first had this behaviour with slimserver 5.1.1 so I 'upgraded' to the
5.3.0b beta server but it did not help.

Thanks,

-- Stuart

Stuart,

It sounds like both squeezeboxes have been configured to the same ip
address. If you are using DHCP I would suggest turning everything off
(thats your squeezeboxes, PC and router) and then powering it all back
up one at a time. Otherwise if you have configured the IP addresses
manually make sure you have set them differently.

Regards,
Richard

I am using DHCP, and have disconnected one of the Squeezboxes. The other
one gets a IP address from the DHCP server and I can see it in the
dhcpd.leases file. I can ping the squeezbox and get a reply. This is
really causing me to tear my hair out!

A few thoughts occur:
- check the signal strength (Settings, Information,Player, down 6), and see
if it wavers when the music goes
- go to the Server settings and change the player song progress display to
show the Squeezbox buffer - they should fill up and keep pretty full
- look for microwave oven activity, or other causes of wi-fi interference
such as cordless phones, electric motors (as in fridges) or (as in my case)
halogen light transformers

Thanks for the ideas, but I guess I should have mentioned that these are
wired SB. Still struggling...

Stuart,

Is SlimServer responding via the web interface when the player can't
connect?

I talked to a gentleman yesterday that was running in to almost exactly
the same symptoms that you're describing.

In his case, he was using a 3com 802.11g router (3CRWE754G72-A fw
1.11), which had a very old firmware version. Installing the latest
firmware version on the router fixed the problem.

Yup, the web interface is fine. Softsqueeze looses the connection too if
that helps.

I have figured out what was going on, just thought I would update you all
incase you are ever as daft as I was! The problem was that the slimserver
box was having DHCP problems and so was releasing and renewing the network
connection rapidly. I never saw the html pages go away as the server had
reconnected whenever I tried to use them.

Anyway, I can now justify getting a couple of those lovely looking
graphical displays...hmmmm

Stuart,

Can you explain what was causing this and how you fixed it?

Could be useful information for our support staff and FAQ.

thanks

Sure, but I will have to hide behind my blushes of embarassment...

The slimserver was requesting a DHCP address, which it was given, and then
DHCP tried to update the dynamic DNS for the server. But on doing this
got an error so the DHCP lease was revoked, slimserver machine then asked
for another one, and so. I cured this by removing all the DHCP leases and
removing the DDNS journal file and then restarting everything.

I think I must have had my beer spectacles on last night for not seeing this!
