View Full Version : Problems with latest beta and XP

Peter --

I found the only answer was to do a full uninstall of 5.3.0b1 (using the
Uninstall.exe in the SlimServer directory/program group), and _then_ (after
having rebooted the PC in paranoia ;-) do a clean install of the previous
version -- in my case, the 5.2.1 release (rather than a nightly).

Otherwise, as you say, Slim.exe just quits again...!

HTH...

Yes, thats right. After a complete uninstall of the 2004-08-04 (5.3.0b1)
version, and reinstall of 2004-08-03 (5.3.0) everything is ok again.

Thanks,
Peter

Some info on the latest versions on XP:

I had to go back to the version from 2004-08-01

2004-08-04: Server quits during startup/reboot (needs uninstall before
installing older version)
2004-08-03: Above ok, but server quits after pressing power-down button on
the squeezebox remote during playback
2004-08-02: Above ok, but server quits when connecting to shoutcast radio
2004-08-01: Ok

The display-size-problem is gone in 2004-08-02 and 2004-08-01 (large and
small display is correct again)

the display size problem has a patch at bug.slimdevices.com and should be part
of tomorrow's build.

I would suggest temporarily removing any plugins that you may have installed,
just for a test. Though backward compatibility was a priority, something might
have been overlooked. Its a bit of a shot in the dark, but worth a quick test.

also, try installing without "start automatically", then start the server from a
command prompt, run c:\program files\slimserver\server\slim.exe. See if there
is more info when it crashes than what has appeared in the event log.

I disabled all plugins and run slim.exe from a cmd-file.

2004-08-03: When pushing power(off) on the remote the server crashes
immediatly with a windows-error. No entry in the log-file. In the event-log:
"Error program slim.exe, version 0.0.0.0, error module perl58.dll, version
5.8.3.809, error adress 0x00086928."

In the event-log from earlier today I can se that the 2004-08-04 version
crashed with the same error:
"Error program slim.exe, version 0.0.0.0, error module perl58.dll, version
5.8.3.809, error adress 0x00086928."

In order to make things run again I have to uninstall the 2004-08-03 version
before installing the 2004-08-02. Otherwise the server gives errors and the
following in the log-file:
Undefined subroutine &Slim::Display::Display::symbol called at
C:/Programmer/SlimServer/server/Plugins/LineX.pm line 281.

But after un/reinstall the 2004-08-02 is running ok again including
shoutcast radio plugin so it seems thats the latest version you can run
without problems.

I can't try the latest 2004-08-05 version, as the link points to a wrong /
broken file.

Peter

Hi again,

Just tested the 2004-08-05 after it's been fixed, and the problem is the
same as in the 2004-08-04:
Before reboot everything is ok, after reboot slim.exe breaks with a windows
error:
"Error program slim.exe, version 0.0.0.0, error module perl58.dll, version
5.8.3.809, error adress 0x00086928."

I think I have been experiencing the same (or similar) problem as you. Everything was fine with 5.2.1, but after installing recent nightly builds the Windows service does not start after reboot. I get a "Pearl interpreter" error reported in the event log.

I have tried completely uninstalling slimserver from my machine and reinstalling the latest nightly, which initially works but then fails to work if I reboot the machine.

Have you found an answer to your problem yet?

Phil

Yes, I thing I just found the problem !

It's the timeformat (!) If I change it to the default all problems are gone,
if I use the one below (entered a long time ago) the server breaks down
under XP with version 2004-08-03 and foreward...

timeFormat = |%I:%M:%S %p (Default timeformat)
timeFormat = %H,%M,%S (My timeformat)

After changing the timeformat I'm running todays version, even after a
reboot of the server :-)

Peter, that format doesn't cause errors for me. Can you send me the
exact wording of the error in the log?

I found that I have needed to do a complete uninstall before reinstalling in order to use the slimserver after a reboot. The first thing I generally do is change the config settings - convert to fishbone skin, and change the date/time formats, plus a few other tweaks. It makes sense that a configuration setting could cause the problem.

Strange that something so inconspicuous as changing the time format could bring the whole server down, if that is what the problem is. I will make one configuration change at a time, rebooting after each, to determine what is causing my crash after reboot.

Does pearl have proper exception handling, like any decent language? If so, perhaps some error handling could be added :)

Hi Dean,

There's nothing in Slimserver's log, it's a windows error. From the
event-log:
AppName: slim.exe AppVer: 0.0.0.0 ModName: perl58.dll

ModVer: 5.8.3.809 Offset: 00086928

I only need change the timeformat in slimserver.pref to make the breakdown
appear / disappear. Do you need anyting else ?

Peter

Thanks, Peter.

Alas, that doesn't give me much information. Usually there's some more
detail in the Event Viewer log. If there isn't try starting the server
from the command line (c:\Program Files\SlimServer\server\slim.exe) and
there should be some message printed out there.

Hi Peter,

Ok, thanks. When you run slim.exe from the command line, does it work
properly?

If not, when it quits, is there anything printed out?

Also, what language are you using in Windows?

Hi Dean,

If the time format is "wrong" then slim.exe crashes during startup and
nothing is printed on the screen / in the log-file.

I run a Danish XP version.

Hi Peter,

I'm sorry, I'm not being clear. First, make sure that SlimServer isn't
running. Then, I'd like you to open a command-line prompt:

Start -> Accessories -> Command Prompt

Then type:

cd C:\Program Files\SlimServer\server

Then type:

slim.exe

This should start SlimServer manually. When it crashes, it should
print out some diagnostic information. It may not be anything new, but
I want to make sure we haven't missed anything.

Thanks,

dean

You were clear :-). I did like you described, and nothing is printed on the
screen. The windows-error-window comes, and slim.exe just exits to the
command prompt

Ok, thanks. I'm guessing that it's related to Danish version of XP,
somehow.

One question for you, does it work if the date string is:

timeFormat = %I,%M,%S

I'd like to know what specific change to the date string is causing the
crash.

Philip Meyer

A follow-up to this. I changed to the fishbone skin, and changed my squeezebox player settings, and after a reboot and restart slimserver still started up fine.

I then ONLY changed the time format from the default to "hh:mm:ss (24)", and stopped the service. I could not restart the service.

I then tried running slim.exe from a console window. After a pause of about 15 seconds, I got a slim.exe error dialog:

"slim.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close."... and contained the error that Peter has already reported (pearl58.dll, ModVer: 5.8.3.809, Offset: 00086928).

No information is output to the console window.

Looking in the EventViewer, I get one error message logged "Pearl interpreter failed."

timeFormat = %H,%M,%S (Breaks)
timeFormat = |%I,%M,%S (Works)
timeFormat = |%H:%M:%S (Works)
timeFormat = |%H,%M,%S (Works)
