Just to counteract some of the complaints about the surprise display
improvement...

I bought a squeezebox Saturday, and I'm happy, even if it's the old
two-line display. It's my second Squeezebox, and it's a great value. I
bought it for what it is. I certainly did not buy it hoping that
Slimdevices would never improve it --- quite the opposite.

In an industry full of vapourware (including the now infamous "tubular"
competitor!), an announcement with an availability of "today" is as good
as it gets.

The upgrade offer is great, too, though it'd be really, really nice if
Slimdevices would use something --- ANYTHING --- other than UPS for
delivery to Canada.

Speaking of good companies, I bought both of my Squeezeboxes from Kwartha
TV and Radio, and I'm impressed with their customer service and shipping
(next day courier, $CAN 10.00). Any chance of the upgrade being available
through Kwartha TV and Radio?

Just to add my 2 cents, I bought a second squeezebox on Wednesday,
which was delivered this past Monday. Am I disappointed that I missed
out by a few days? sure! Am I still happy with my purchase?
Absolutely!

I couldn't agree more. This applies to everything. UPS offers sweet deals to
US companies, who probably don't realise just how badly they rip off canadians.

I second the recommendation for Kawartha TV. That's where I
bought my previous ones. I happened to luck out the other
way on this new version. I was going to purchase another
wired unit and all their stock got flooded out in the
Peterborough storms. It turns out their new shipment
has the new displays! :-) I usually get the short end
of the stick on these things.

As for others complaining about just buying an 'old' one:
sorry but you will just have to suck it up. At some point,
even with direct ones having 30 days, some people are going
to be just on the wrong side. What do you want to do? Have
vapourware announcements that depress current sales and kill
the company? Never have new products? At least there is a
nice upgrade path for those who wish it; that's more than I
can say for a lot of products I've bought. With computers
and electronics you have to expect this kind of obsolescence
curve even though it sucks to be on the cusp. That being said
one thing that might have mitigated the PR reaction, made a few
more bucks for slimdevices, and made it easier for resellers to
unload old stock would be to have priced the new ones slightly
higher, eg. $40 more.

Anyhow the new display looks great and if we can just get
native FLAC in the firmware I would be really laughing.
