OK - Pending Slim getting their international upgrade program in
place , and ever keen to get mine at a reasonable cost I have ordered some
displays direct from SlimDevices - I have a couple spare. If anyone wants to
buy those from me they can do this on a plain split of the cost/shipping and
import duties. The shipping as you will know is expensive from SlimDevices
($76). I am guessing the cost will work out around 55 to 60. You would
return the exchanged VFD to me - ( which is sort of the area I make a little
gain as I have a use for these - indeed I will buy anyones spare VFD's for
$20 / 11 if they wish to contact me). Once Slim get a satisfactory
upgrade offer in place then you may find that better. If anyone is nervous
about upgrading their Squeezebox themselves I might be able to help here
too, although I haven't investigated Slim's warranty policy on this....

Please contact me OFFLIST if you're interested ....

Just to mention I feel it is a great offer that Slim Devices have
made in allowing existing hardware to be upgraded like this and at a very
reasonable price... Graphic VFD's are expensive. Not many manufacturers
would do this instead choosing to totally supercede models with 'the
enhanced version'... Thanks Slim....

Just a thought, but presumably these display devices are fairly standard electronic components? Would it be reasonable to assume that we might be able to source them directly from distributors in the UK without having to buy through slimdevices? We would just need a manufacturer and part no. ?

Does this make sense?

it would, but the display in this case is a custom job. Hopefully its cheaper to
manufacture this custom display than to purchase an off-the shelf module from
noritake as they have done. This way, we can know in teh short term that Slim
Devices is making more money and in the longer term, that the pricing for
squeezebox will have more room to come down so that expansion comes at a lesser
price :)
