View Full Version : How do I set the 'master' box for Synch'ing purposes?

Sometimes I want the Duet to synch with what is playing on the Boom, sometimes vice-versa. However the setup I have (ReadyNAS Duo running 7.4.1) seems to dictate that whatever is playing on the Boom will be synch-ed to the Duet - so, if I set the Synch ON from either player, the Boom always takes preferecne.

Apologies if my description is a little unclear, I've had a search through other threads, and had a look at what I thought may be relevant server settings, but can't find any clues.

No, it depends on what you are controlling. IIRC (I never use the native UIs for syncing) one UI has a "sync to" and the other "sync another box with me" type UI.

ok, I'll try and unpick your statement a lttle, but I have to say I found it a little impenetrable in terms of assistance.

1 No what? No thanks?

2 In my post I told you I was controlling a Duet and Boom.

3 You never use the native UI's for syncing - can you explain why that is significant? How do you sync then? how do I set the master box for sync'ing purposes (note how I'm cleverly asking the same question again, because I didn't seem to get an answer that I could either understand or that helped)

4 If I sync from the server then the Boom always takes preference. If I sync from the Duet the Boom always take preference. (again, restating the problem in slightly different words -sometimes it helps)

6 Which UI has a 'sync to'? which has a 'sync another box with me UI'?

Can I suggest you post as if you're talking to your 8 year old nephew? Thanks for the fast response though...

1. No, no Squeezebox will take precedence (your assumption, it's wrong).
2. Yes. This is incomplete and impenetrable, too. The duet has two parts, a Controller and a Receiver. The Controller can be used to control the Receiver or the Boom, so do you control the Boom with the Controller or the Controls on the Boom?
3. I use iPeng. In iPeng it's not ambiguous, this is such for exactly the reason that I found the native UIs confusing in this point.
4. You always sync "on the server", no matter what you do. I assume you are talking about the web interface. Which version? Let's assume 7.4 or newer.
Then the player you are NOT actually controlling will be the master, it's a "sync to" kind of UI as in "sync the current player to..." while I believe on the Duet Controller it's the other way around. I can't try the Boom's built-in UI, since I don't have it here right now but I seem to remember it's been "sync to", too in the past and I remember some discussion about changing it in 7.4 (?) which all may add to some confusion.
5. ?
6. As I stated in 4. You will have to try yourself to find out which should be possible as soon as you are aware that there is such a difference and that there is no "precedence" of a unit. Which is what I told you.
I could, but this would include moving over to the other room and powering up the Controller which I'm too lazy to do on a Jan. 1st. Sorry.

I don't have an 8 year old nephew, the 8 year olds I know talk twitter-speak which I don't understand.

You can sync from each player as well as the computer UI. In basic Sync both players are the "master" as it were, whichever player you use to change selection of the stream also Syncs this change with the other player.

There is an SBS Plugin called The Synchronizer that adds more features for syncing on both the players and the UI via Extras. One of the Sync option in this Plugin is "Sync all players to this one" at the player itself.

Settings > Plugins > The Synchronizer

thanks Toby I'll install that plugin and give it a go - sounds just the job.

Alternatively I could struggle on with the reverse negative double logic (RNDL) of the native sync feature.

"Other Players" is another plugin that can help with syncing. It does explain what it does :)

thanks Pippin - I'll try that too, although now I've installed The Sychroniser which does let me do what I want in a kind of web-based clunky way, but it's always interesting to try other flavours in a solution.

I'd like to be able to do the master sync-ing from the player....will have a look and post back.

(nb for anyone else going through this - you have to activate The Synchroniser plug-in, type in a set name to finesse the default settings)

Other players also lets you send and grab playlist between players.

Thats pretty cool, If i'm listening in my livingroom and is on my way to kitchen to cook food I can just send the playlist to my kitchen player .

and, for me The Synchroniser does the job perfectly. I can user it from any point of access, and it is seamless - synchs mid-track, with nary a stutter.

'Other Players' grabs the playlist ok, but stops it on the original player, therefore isn't really a synchronising tool. But still useful for moving playlists about.

To me, the fact that there seems to be a plugin, a setting, a tip or a wrinkle for everything you may ever want to do is a BIG plus for the Squeezebox.

Thanks again to everyone who posted helpfully on this one.
